MILBURN D. MYERS, OF ANDERSON, MISSOURI.
MUSIC HOLDER AND TURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILBURN D. MYERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Anderson, in the county of Mc- Donald and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music Holders and Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to music holders and turners, and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel case which can be set upon a piano and which is provided with a seat for the covers of sheet music and hinged holders for the loose sheets which are centrally mounted in the case and by means of finger-operated mechanism, can be readily rotated to turn the sheets carried thereby.
One simple and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the improved music holder and turner. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the leaf holders. Fig. 7 is an enlarged top plan view thereof, showing a leaf in the holder.
The improved music holder and turner comprises a substantially rectangular open casing 8 that is covered with plush or other soft material that ornaments the same and also prevents the piano being scratched or otherwise damaged by said casing. The casing is supported by a pair of standards 9 which have enlarged feet 10 and which are also covered with soft material. The lower edge of the casing 8 has its front surface provided with a plurality of grooves 11 which are arranged in groups at each side of the center thereof. The upper edge of the casing is provided-with recesses 12, one at each side of the center. The front surface of each side edge of the casing is provided with a central recess 13.
A vertical shaft 14 extends through the center of casing 8 and its projecting upper end is equipped with a hand-grip 15 that is preferably ornamental and by means of which said shaft can be readily removed from said casing. Leaf holders are rota- Specification of Letters Patent.

tably mounted on shaft 14, each holder being formed of two duplicate sections 16 which are preferably formed from a single sheet of resilient metal and made in open rectangular shape. Said sections are connected by narrow strips which are rounded when the sections are substantially parallel and provide the hinge ears 18 which rotatably mount the holders upon the shaft 14. The upper horizontal edges and the vertical edges of the sections are provided with the reduced projections 19 which are seated in the recesses 12 and 13, respectively, of the casing when said sections are seated in the central depressions 21 of said casing, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The lower edges of the sections have depending projections 22, the free ends of which are engaged by a clip 28 to hold the sections in abutting relation so that a sheet of music will be firmly held between said sections.
In the accompanying drawings, three holders have been shown, each being composed of two duplicate sections and the casing 8 has been shown provided with six base grooves 11, said grooves being arranged in groups of three, the groups being disposed on opposite sides of the central shaft 14. The depending projections 22 of the holders are arranged so that the projection of one of the outer holders will engage the outer groove of each group of grooves, the projection of the intermediate holder will engage the central groove of each group, and the projection of -the other outer holder will engage the inner groove of each group. Said projections are graduated in length and all extend well below the bottom of the casing 8.
The hinge ears 18 of the leaf holders are so arranged that they can be mounted in superimposed relation on shaft 14, and said ears are retained in spaced relation by the washers 24.
A horizontal shaft 25 is mounted in bracket bearings 26 carried by the lower portion of the rear of casing 8, said shaft being centrally located and having the end sleeves 27 of angular hand levers 28 rotatably mounted thereon, said levers proj ecting beneath the lower portion of casing 8 and having their free ends provided with finger grips 29. The hand levers are arranged in groups on each side of the vertical center of the casing, each group corresponding in number with the number of leaf holders employed. Springs 30, preferably flat and bowed, are carried by the rear of casing 8 and their free portions engage the hand levers 28 to normally prevent pivotal movement of said levers.
A vertical shaft 31 depends from the center of the bottom of easing 8 and has a plurality of bell-crank levers 32 pivotally mounted thereon. Said levers are retained in spaced relation by the washers 33 and a nut 34; on said shaft provides a seat for said levers and washers. The bell-crank levers 32 correspond in number to the hand levers 28, and each includes a short arm 35 and an elongated arm 36 that projects at right angles to the said short arm 35, said elongated arm terminating in an upturned free portion 37. Links 38 pivotally connect the short arms 35 to the rear end portions of the hand levers 28. The bell-crank levers 32 are arranged so that an equal number of their long arms 36 project in opposite directions, and said arms are relatively graduated in length and are employed for contacting with the base projections 22 of the leaf holders to swing said holders from one side of the casing 8 to the other side. A brace rod 39 connects the feet 10 of standards 9.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the projections 22 extend into the path of movement of the arms 36 and that said arms 36 are operated by depressing the hand levers 28 so that the holders will be rocked, one at a time, from one side of the casing 9 to the other side. Shaft 14 being removable, the same can be readily disengaged from the hinges 18 of the holder, so that said shaft and holders can be removed from the said casing. This facilitates the placing of the covers of the music in the casing and also facilitates placing the loose sheets, or leaves, in the holders.
The clips 23 are preferably formed of folded or doubled strips of resilient sheet metal and have been shown attached to the base projections 22. It will be seen, however, that they may be used in connection with the projections 19 and serve the same purpose as when used in connection with the projections 22.
Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A music holder and turner comprising a casing, a shaft therein, leaf holders each formed from a single length of resilient sheet material and shaped to provide two substantially rectangular sections connected by rear strips that are doubled to provide hinges for engaging said shaft, each section being provided with base projections, means for engaging the projections of each holder to retain the sections thereof in contact, and means for engaging said projections to independently swing said holders on the hinge connections with said shaft.
2. A music holder and turner comprising a casing, said casing having a depressed central portion, the front edges of said casing being provided with upper and side recesses and with bottom grooves, a shaft in said casing, leaf holders independently hinged to said shaft and normally seated in said depressed portion, said leaf holders being provided with upper and side projections for seating in said recesses and bottom projections for seating in said grooves, and means for engaging said bottom projections to independently swing said holders.
3. A music holder and turner comprising a casing, a shaft therein, leaf holders formed from single lengths of resilient material doubled intermediate their length to form a pair of substantially parallel sections joined by tongues forming hinge ears, reduced projeotions extending from said parallel members, depending projections extending from the lower portions of said members and adapted to be connected together to retain a sheet of music between said members, and means connected with said casing and adapted to engage said depending projections to turn said leaf holders.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
