Quorum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO A. OBERG, OF PRESTON, WASHINGTON.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Application filed. August 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGO A. OBERG, a subject of the Crown of Sweden, residing at Preston, in the county of King and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for turning sheet music automatically at the will of the operator, and its object is to adapt means whereby the pressure of an air bulb, either by hand or by foot, will turn the music, sheet by sheet, when desired.
It consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a music leaf turner hereinafter more fully described, and particularly stated in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1, is a front view of a music turner according to my invention, showing one clamp swung back in position to receive a leaf, two arms in position waiting to be turned and one arm as having been turned. Fig. 2, represents the same as seen from the lower edge, partly in section, with three arms unturned. Fig. 3, represents a cross section at line m Fig. 1. Fig. 1 shows my invention carrying a sheet of music as in service. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary upper end view on a larger scale, showing the escapement device. Fig. 6 represents a vertical section at line y Fig. 5. Fig. 7 shows a horizontal section of the escapement detent at line 2 Figs. 5 and 6.
Numeral 4, shown as a plain board, may represent any style of music rack, ornamental or plain, for a piano or organ or a holder on a music stand. 5 a pair of bearings secured thereon to hold a pivot pin 6, on which the arms 7 8, and 9 are mounted to revolve. A spring 28, wound around the hub of each arm and acting between it and the bearing 5, has a constant tendency to rotate the arm over to the left. Each arm has stud 10 projecting from one side to be engaged by the hook of a detent 11. This detent is provided with a rod 12 which is secured to a piston 13 that is fitted to reciprocate longitudinally in the chamber of a Specification of Letters Patent.

cylinder 14. A flexible bulb 15 and pipe 16 communicate at 17 with the cylinder to force air thereinto, pressing the piston outward to push the detent hook 11 out of engagement with the stud 10. Each arm is curved as at 20, and parted longitudinally along the line 21 into two jaws 22 and 23, the ends being hinged together by means of thin springs 24 that tend to close the jaws and to hold fast to any thin matter like paper, placed between them. In Fig. 3, the jaws are shown wide open ready to receive the music sheet. The jaw 22 is provided with a handle 25 by means of which the jaw may be raised to admit paper. Each clamp is hinged at 26 to the main body of the arm so that the clamp may be swung out of line, as at 37, to pass over the upper edge of the sheet when insorting it. The detent 11 is provided with an escapement catch 27 that passes over the next stud 10 below the one being released by the hook of the detent 11, to prevent the arms below from being swung over when the upper one is released. The flexible pipe 16 may be of any desired length to permit the location of the bulb 15 on the piano at a convenient place to be operated by a light touch of the hand, or on the floor to be operated by foot when it is desired to turn a leaf. In place of the bearings 5 any suitable device may be substituted to attach this music turner to a music stand or other support.
All the sheets of music 30 or leaves of a book that are to be manipulated by this music turner should be secured in the jaws in rotation while all the jaws are held over to the right by the detent, and the fold of the sheets or book should be located in line of the pivot pin 6, then each leaf will be laid smoothly as shown in Fig. 1 when turned. This device is efiicient, simple and inexpensive.
I claim:
A music leaf turner comprising a series of arms mounted side by side upon a pivot pin to rotate in one plane; a pair of paperclamping jaws attached to each arm as an extension thereof, the jaws being U-shaped and secured together at each end by a spring and pivotally secured to the arm to swing awa' from the 3a 361" a sarin to rotate each i11 the hook out of the said oath at the Will arm; a stud projecting from each arm to of the operator. 10 one side of the plane of rotation; a detent In testimony whereof I my signature having a hook and an escapenient catch 10- in presence of two Witnesses.
