WITNESSES: v INVENTOR W a Ls/a/rl'fi/vcfi.
mom/5m A PLANOGRAPH LEIGH LAWRENCE FINCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGARETTE-FORMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 8, 1911.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911. Serial No. 625,667.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEIGH L. citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigaret-te- Formers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for forming cigarettes and particularly for making cigarettes by hand, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which a cigarette may be quickly, easily and compactly rolled or formed, and which consists of a flexible sheet preferably rectangular in form and preferably longer than it is wide and adapted to fold or bend transversely only.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cigarette former and showing one step in the process of making a cigarette Fig. 2, a partial section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;- and, Fig. 3, a perspective view showing the process of rolling 0r forming a cigarette.
In the practice of my invention I provide a flexible sheet a which is preferably longer than it is wide, and also preferably slightly wider than the length of a cigarette, and said sheet is preferably composed of small transverse rods 6 connected in any desired manner, this connection being made, in the form of construction shown, by line threads or cords 0 passed around said rods in opposite directions, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and in connection with the rods 6 connected as described, I employ a fabric sheet 03 which is secured to one side of the rods 7), as shown, this connection being made by pasting or otherwise, and the ends of the fabric sheet (Z are preferably folded around the end portions of the flexible sheet formed by the rods I), as clearly shown at 03 In making a cigarette, the wrapper e is placed on the sheet a; transversely thereof, as shown in Fig. 1 and the tobacco f is FINCH, a
placed on the wrapper e, as is also shown in said figure, said tobacco being first slightly rolled by hand, and the sheet a is then folded centrally over the wrapper e wit-h the tobacco f therein, as shown in Fig. 3, and while the folded sheet a is held between the thumbs and fingers of the hands, as shown in said figure, the said thumbs and fingers are moved back and forth and at the same time the end a of the sheet a is moved forwardly while the end a of said sheet is moved backwardly, and the result of this operation is the complete formation of the cigarette, the tobacco being tightly rolled in the wrapper and the wrapper being completely rolled around the tobacco, and the edge of the wrapper of the cigarette is secured in the usual manner.
Although I have described the preferred construction of the flexible sheet a, it will be understood that my invention isnot lim ited to this exact construction, all that is necessary in this connection, being that a sheet of the required longitudinal and transverse dimensions be provided, said sheet being formed of comparatively stiff material which cannot be bent or folded except transversely, but which will bend easily and fold easily on transverse lines or lines which cross said sheet in one direction only.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The herein described device for use in making cigarettes, said device consisting of a plurality of small cylindrical rods placed closely adjacent and flexibly connected.
2. The herein described device for use in forming or making cigarettes, said device consisting of a flexible sheet of predetermined length and width and consisting of a plurality of small rods flexibly connected by means of fine cords or threads passed around said rods longitudinally of said sheet and in opposite directions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 6th day of May, 1911.
LEIGH LAWRENCE FINCH.
