To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH RosENrnLD, a Citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mufflers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to mufflers designed to be worn around the neck, and consists in the formation and association of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a muffler of the character described which will fit closely around the neck without choking and which is of such a character as to render it adjustable for necks of various sizes without loosening or changing the fastening device, the arrangement being such as to enable the lapping points of the muffler at the front to be turned back to expose the collar, if desired.

The above object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a muffler embodying my invention, the portion thereof which encircles the neck being in the shape of a V. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the neck piece straight. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the ends of the muffler showing the detached parts of the glove fastener employed to secure the muffler in position around the neck. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the ends of the muffler with the parts of the fastener engaged, as when securing the ends of the muffler together. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the muffler as when in use upon the neck of the wearer. .Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the adaptability of the muffler to adjust itself to the neck of a large person and still remain closed. Fig. 7 is a view showing how the points on the neck piece may be turned down to expose the collar of the wearer, if desired. Fig. 8 is a view showing the muffler in position before being secured by the fastening means, illustrating the manner in which the points of the neck piece overlap.

Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates the neck piece which connects the

end portions

2 and 3 respectively, said end portions being adapted to hang over the breast of the wearer when the muffler is closed around the neck. The neck piece and end portions are preferably formed integral of knitted or woven fabric. It is preferred to make the neck piece in the form of a V, as shown in Fig. 1, because when so shaped it fits closely and perfectly to the neck and the point of the V which extends downwardly under the coat, assists in retaining the mufiler in place. A straight piece however, may be employed, as shown in Fig. 2, but it is not quite so satisfactory. The front edge of the neck piece at each end near the point of juncture with the end piece of the muffler is provided with a projecting point 4. These points overlap when the muffler is placed around the neck, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and close the meeting ends of the neck piece at the front above the fastening means 5, comprising the male and female parts of a glove fastener which.

are secured respectively to the margins of the end portions of the muffler below the points 4. The lapping points 4 close around the neck of the wearer and form a flexible collar for the muffler standing above the fastening means which will conform to the neck and readily adjust itself to necks of various sizes and still maintain the collar of the mufller closed at the front. This arrangement makes it unnecessary to manufacture mufllers having neck pieces of various lengths, as a muffler made in accordance with this invention, will accommodate all wearers.

Mufilers have heretofore been made from which the points 4 of the neck piece have been omitted, and wherein the fastening means have been placed upon the neck piece at the point where the end pieces meet around the neck of the wearer. This arrangement made it necessary to make the mufflers in various sizes for the reason that a muffler whereon the fastening means were placed so as to close the neck piece tightly around the neck of a small person, would render the muffler too tight for the neck of a larger person, and vice versa. With this arrangement the entire range of variation between the smallest and the largest necks is provided for with but one size of muflier, because of the provision for permitting the muffler to adjust itself to the neck of the wearer without causing the meeting ends of the neck piece to separate.

When the muffler is fastened around the neck, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the collar and a portion of the tie of the wearer may be exposed by turning the points at of-the neck piece downwardly, as shown in Fig. 7. The locating of the fastening means below the points, as shown, enables said points to be turned down so as to roll the muffler away from the neck without unfastening it, an arrangement of advantage to the wearer when temporarily entering a warm building, as the neck can thereby be relieved without unfastening the muffler or removing it, the muffler remaining in such position that when going outside, to again protect the neck, it is only necessary to turn up the corners 4 of the neck piece.

It will be noted that the margins of the

2 and 3 lap when the mufller is in position on the neck of the wearer. To hold the lapped margins of the end portions together at their lower end, the margin of the end portion 2 is provided wit-h a projecting tongue 6, which is preferably V- shaped and which is adapted to enter the button-hole like aperture 7 in the margin of the end portion 3. When the tongue 6 is drawn through said aperture, the clinging neck piece having at its terminals contiguous to the end pieces transversely projecting points in the plane of the connected end pieces and extending beyond the front margins thereof, said points being adapted to overlap at the juncture of the end and neck 1 pieces when the mufller is being worn, and fastening means for o1n1ng the end portlons located on said end portions entirely below the portion of the muffler which embraces the neck of the wearer.
