FOLDING CASE.

PATENT Orrror..
LEOPOLD HAUSER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filedA .Tune 10, 1911. Serial No. 632,307.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD HAUSER, a citizen of the United States, and a .resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new andY useful Folding Case, of which the following is a specification, reference being made to the drawings formi-ng a part thereof.
The invention relates to a case which when the parts are in unfolded position can be utilized to support in exposed view an article placed upon one of the parts and which when the parts are in folded position can support and hold the article within the case for the purpose of transportation or other- Wise.
The case illustrated upon the drawings is intended to receive and support a watch but it is obvious that by properly shaping and constructing the interior of one of the members that the case may be utilized for receiving and supporting other articles.
In the drawings which illustrate a specific embo-diment of the invention, Figure lis a plan view of the case with the parts or members thereof in the folded or closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the case with the inner part or member in unfolded or display position. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical secg tional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken on the line 4;-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the outer member and a portion of the inner member in extended position. This view shows an intermediate position of the members of the case relative to each other when being changed from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4 and vice versa.
The case designated as 1 comprises two telescoping parts or members namely the outer member or box 2 and t-he inner mem ber or box 3 having therein a portion 4 properly shaped and constructed to receive and support any desired article. The inner member is slidable within the outer member and there is a pin and slot connection 5 and 6 therebetween which permits this sliding movement to take place and serves as a connecting means between the members.
The outer box or member comprises a base 1 7, parallel sides 8 extending the full length thereof, an end 9 and a top 10 which exltends part way only of the length of the member. It will thus be o-bserved that one @end and a portion of the top of the outer member are left open and also that the slot 6 extends substantially the full length of the fsides. The inner box or member 3 comprises a back 11, sides 12 and ends 13 and 14. This box contains the portion i which is constructed and shaped so as to receive and support t-he watch or whatever article may be desired. The end 13 holds the pin 5 and is so shaped that the inner member can be freely swung between the posit-ions shown in j Figs. Ll and 5. The end 1^-l may be cut away as at 15 to permit a portion of the article `or a part attached thereto to extend outside .of the case. The inner member is open at one side so that an article supported therein will be exposed to view when the members occupy the posit-ion shown in Fig. 4. The
back of the inner member has its outer surface at two different elevations 17 and 18- and it will be noted that the part 18 is level with the topv surface of the outer member when the members are in folded position as shown in Fig. 3. The top 10 of the outer Imember is cut away at 19 to make room for lthe finger to enter so as to readily move the members to the extended position.
The interior of the inner box may be lined Iwith any suitable material as velvet while fall other exposed parts of the Amembers may `be covered with any other suitable. material vas for instance leather or silk. All corners or edges of the case are preferably roundedlor beveled as shown in orderto give a neat appearance and also to add to the life of the covering when the case is used.
The operation is as follows: From the position shown in Fig. 3 the parts are extended as shown in Fig. 5, thence the inner member is swung so that it occupies the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position it is held in place by the pin 5 and the intermediate portion of the back which rests upon the edge of the top of the outer member at 20. It will thus be apparent that the inner member is held in inclined position on the outer member by means extending between the members at the end thereof and by engagement between the members at the portion intermediate of the length.
The box can be made of metal, wood or any suitable material and may or may not be lined or covered as desired but of course *llt will be apparent that the case' can be usedas a display case for all kinds of articles on the counter or elsewhere as in stores or wherever desired.
It is obvious that various forms and moditcations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A folding case comprising inner and outer members slidably connected by pin and slot connections therebetween the parts so constructed and arranged that the inner member can when in closed position form with the outer member a box-like construction, the parts also constructed and arranged so that the inner member can be moved to extended position and from said last mentioned position be swung to an inclined position where it can be supported by the outer member.
2. A case comprising inner and outer members having pin and slot connections therebetween the outer member having a base, upwardly extending side portions, and a top portion between the side portions which extends only part way of the length of the base portion, an inner member which fits within the outer member and which is provided with side portions and a back portion l 4outer members, the inner member capable lwhen the members are extended of being therebetween, the shape of the members and the pin and slot connection therebetween being such that when the members are in ex tended posit-ion the free end of the inner member can be swung upwardly and backwardly so that the intermediate portion of the inner member will rest upon the upper portion of the outer member and be held in inclined position by the pin and slot connection and the engagement of said members with each other.
3. A traveling case having a base and upwardly extending parallel sides with a transverse portion between the upper edge portions of the sides which extends part way only over the base portion and an inner member slidably mounted between the side portions of the outer member and a pin member therein which engages a slot in the side portions of the outer member' the inner member also having the top portion extending between the sides, the inner member and the outer member so constructed that when the parts are in an extended position the inner member can be swung upwardly and backwardly so that the upper portion thereof will engage the portion which extends transversely between the upper edges of the sides and thereby support the inner member in an inclined position.
l. In a. case of thecla-ss described, the combination of an outer box member having a base, parallel sides, an end, and a top extending part way only across the box meinber and an inner member slidably mounted therein, said inner member having side portions, eiid portions and a portion which connects the sides and ends thereof, the inner member capable of occupying an inclined position'relative to the outer member and the outer member and cobetwveen the side portions near the extremities thereof. 5. In a folding case telescoping inner and moved to an inverted and inclined position, said members being held in the last mentioned position by means extending between the members at one end thereof and by engagement of the members with each other tat their intermediate portions.
This specification signed and witnessed this 8th day of June, A. D., 1911.
