DOOR-BOLT SOCKET.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 4, 1911.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911. Serial No. 618,893.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. VARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granby, in the countyof Newton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Bolt Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
This invention relates to door sockets and more particularly to sockets for receiving the bolts upon the lower ends of doors.
An object of the invention is to provide a door bolt socket which will limit the out ward movement of the doorV and allow the bolt to drop into the socket automatically.
Another object is to provide a socket of the above stated nature, which may be readily cleaned of any dirt or dust collecting therein, and, another object is to provide a door stop of the above stated character, which may be formed so that when the door is in open position the bolt receiving groove may be closed by the stop portion of the socket.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view transversely through the bolt receiving aperture, showing a door above the device and the bolt carried by the door within the bolt receiving channel. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device removed from the floor. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View longitudinally through the bolt receiving channel. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 2 when swung upon its hinge to closed position.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the horizontal portion of the door bolt socket and 2 the vertical or door sto portion. The bolt receiving channel 3 1s formed by the substantially semicircular bottom wall 4 and the vertical or side walls 5, which latter extend downwardly from the horizontal portion 1 and connect with the bottom portion 4.
As the curved bottom portion 4 extends from side to side of the device, it will be evident that the channel 3 also extends from side to side and any dirt collecting therein may be easily removed by brushing the same out of either side of the channel 3. It will be noted that the door stop 2 is provided with a substantially semicircular upper surface, the purpose of which will later appear.
The door bolt socket may be secured u on the Hoor or may be embedded in the oor so that its upper surface is flush with the upper surface of the floor and may be secured in position by screws 6 or other suitable means. The device is so positioned that when the door is swung to its closed position its outer side will engage against the stop 2 and allow the lower end of the bolt carried by the door to drop into the channel 3, as shown in Fig. 1. It will thus be seen that this socket will compel the bolt to drop automatically into the bolt receiving channel 3 and the person closing the doors and locking the same will not be compelJed to lhave a light or to feel with his fingers to tell when the bolt is exactly above the bolt channel. Further, this device will lock the bolt securely in position, and, owing to the peculiar formation of the bolt receiving channel 3, the latter may be kept clear of all dirt or other matter preventing the bolt from fitting perfectly within the channel.
As shown in Fig. 4 the horizontal portion 1 is divided into halves, one half being provided with the channel 3, While theother half is provided with the stop 2. The halves are connected by means of the hinge 7 and when the door is to be closed, the device is in the same position as shown in Fig. 1. In this construction, however, when the door is in its open position the section carryin the stop 2 may be swung upon the hinge onto the other section, the stop 2 resting within the channel 3. Thus, the channel 3 will be closed to prevent dirt or other matter from collecting therein and the stop 2 will be out of the way and in place of the channel 3 and stop 2 will be a smooth flat surface which may be flush with the floor, provided the sections have been properly embedded in the door, thus preventing all possibility of persons stumbling or tripping over the door bolt socket. When this construction is employed and it is desired to lock the door, the top section is returned to its proper position practically on a plane With the other half of the horizontal por- 'tion 1 and the door swung to its closed position. The stop 2 will prevent the door from swinging outwardly beyond a predetermined distance and the bolt of the door will drop into the channel 3 to lock the door in closed position. Thus, it will be seen that I have provided a novel form of door bolt socket, which may be employed in connection with any swinging door and which will serve its purpose effectively.
Owing to the extreme simplicity of the device it is evident that the same may be manufactured at an extremely low figure and will be Within the reach of all persons having use for such a device.
What I claim is:
l. A bolt receiving socket, including a horizontal portion, having a bolt receiving channel, and means carried by said socket being adapted when in one position to act as a door stop and when in another position, to act as a covering for closing said socket.
2. A holt receiving socket, including a horizontal portion, having a bolt receiving channel and a swinging portion hinged to the horizontal portion, said swinging portion being adapted when in one position to act as a door stop and when in another position, to act as a covering for closing said casing.
