UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
HENRY W. KNAUTZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY W. KNAUTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of whichl the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in display devices designed especially for employment in displaying of cloth samples or other similar artic-les which may be arranged upon cards for display; the present application being a division of my application Serial #572,112, filed July 15th, 1910.
The object of the invention is the provision of a display device of the character mentioned in which the display cards may be so mounted as to adapt the same to be readily connected or disconnected, and in which any number of said cards may be connected together for displaying.
A further object is the provision of a display device as mentioned which will be of economical construction and of great etliciency in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lVith these objects in view my invention consists in a display device hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood byV reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a display device embodying my invention, the same being shown in partly extended condition, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on line of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on line g/y of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a plan view of one ofthe sections of the device extended, and Fig. 5 is a section taken on line e-z of Fig. 4.
Referring now to the drawing 1 indicates the display cards upon which are arranged or secured the samples or other articles to be displayed. Said cards, as shown, are preferably of rectangular form, the same being all .of substantially the same dimensions. The lateral edges of each of the cards 1 adjacent one end thereof are provided with transversely alining notches 2. Said cards are detachably secured to a flexible band as set forth in the following z-The above mentioned band comprises a plurality of sections Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Original application filed July 15, 1910, Serial No. 572,112. Divided and this application filed February 6, Serial No. 606,815.
each of which consists of two parallelly extending spaced comparatively narrow strips 3 and 4, said strips being formed of a rigid material preferably card-board, the same being of substantially the same dimensions, the same being of a length equal substantially to the width of the cards 1. Connected to and extending between the strips 3 and 4 is a flexible connecting portion 5 preferably formed of a suitable durable fabric, said portion 5 being, as seen, of a length slightly less than that of said strips 3 and 4, the unattached portion of the connecting element 5 being of a width substantially equal or slightly greater than the width of said strips. Arranged at the extremities of each of the strips 3 are inwardly openino pockets 6 formed preferably of fabric, sai
pockets being adapted to receive the extremities of the end portions of the strips 4 and also portions of the lateral edges ofthe cards 1, the notches 2 being provided in the latter, as is apparent, in order to afford clearance for the inner walls of the pockets in the insertion of the card edges into said pockets. In effecting the engagement of the extremities of the strips 4 and portions of the lateral edges of the cards 1 with the pockets 6 it is evidently necessary to buckle said cards and said strips 4 in order to reduce the width thereof so as to permit of the insertion as above mentioned. Wit-h this arrangement a band is first formed by connecting together sections, each of which comprises a strip 3, a strip 4, and the intermediate connecting flexible portion 5, the strip 4 of each being connected to the strip 8 of the succeeding or adjacent section by engagement of the pockets 6 thereof as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The end portions of the cards 1 in attaching the same, rest upon the strips 4, the extremities of the former engaging, as before described, the pockets 6 of the strips 3. The display device thus formed may be extended to displaying condition as shown at the right hand end portions of Figs. 1 and 2 or into compact contracted condition as shown at the left hand end portions of said figures; the extent of contracting and extending movement being limited by the width of the intermediate unattached or free portions of the connecting element 5. The device thus formed is capable of extension to any length desired so as to adapt the same to accommodate any number of cards, and the latter because of their detachable connection with the supporting band of the device, may be interchanged or removed or replaced as desired.
The device of the construction as set forth is of simple construction, hence may be manufactured at a low cost, and the same is of great efliciency in use.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my display device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and the arrangements of parts described without departing from the spirit of the invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In adisplay device, the combination of a plurality of similar display cards; and means for detachably securing said cards together so as to permit of the display of corresponding sides thereof, said means comprising a band, said band consisting` of a plurality of detachably connected foldable sections; and means provided upon each of said sections adapted to engage corresponding ends of said cards for detachably secur# ing said cards to said band, substantially as described.
Q. In a display device, the combination of a plurality of similar display cards; and means for detachably securing said cards together, said means comprising a band, said band consisting of a plurality of detachably connected foldable sections, each of said sections consisting of two comparatively nar row spaced parallelly extending rigid strips; a flexible strip extending between and connecting said rigid strips; and means provided at the extremities of each of said sections adapted to engage the ends of the other strip of the adjacent section and correspond ing end portions of the lateral edges of said cards for detachably connecting said sections together to form said band and for detachably securing said cards to said band, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HELEN F. LILLIs, JOSHUA R. H. Por'rs.
