Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Application filed March 25, 1911. Serial No. 616,891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM M. MAYO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to bottle holders and more particularly to that class of holders that are used for holding nursing, feeding, medicine bottles and the like.
The objects of my invention are to provide a device of this kind which shall have means by which the holder can be utilized without the necessity of clamping it to a bed post, table or similar article, or which can be placed on the bed easily accessible to the one using it and have a foot thereon which can be placed under the pillow on which the persons head having use of this device is resting.
A further object of my invention is to provide in such a device means for adjustment in many positions so that it will be ready for all the exigencies that naturally arise.
Another object is to provide means whereby the bottle used can be readily tilted to a desirable angle.
Other objects will become apparent as my invention is fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle holder embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a detail of a sliding and tilting bar; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a carrier.
In the appended drawings which illustrate one form of my invention 1 is the main stem of a bottle holder having a lower portion bent to form a circular foot 2 and has mounted thereon a slide 3 which has its outer end 4L slightly curved to tilt a holder 5. The other end 6 of the slide 3 is bent on itself and drilled to fit the stem 1 and is provided with a set screw 7 for securing the bar while in any position that it is desired to hold the slide bar 3. The holder 5 is preferably constructed of a strip of material having clamps S at either end for holding a bottle securely in position. A pair of teeth 9 are formed on the bottom of this holder 5, which loosely engage with the slide bar 3 and permit a certain amount of sidewise motion to the holder 5, which provides for the general movement of the one using the bottle, and prevents the means for conducting the liquid from the bottle from being pulled from out of the same. A hole 10 is provided at the end portion of the slide bar 3 for a peg 11 which is inserted when the carrier 5 is on the slide to act as a stop and prevent the {)lOlClQI from being knocked off the slide In operation the foot 2 of the stem 1 is placed under the pillow and the slide bar 3 is adjusted up or down and angularly to suit the person for whom the holder is provided, and the set screw 7 is threaded in and clamps the stem 1. The bottle is then clamped in the holder 5 and the holder is moved to a convenient position on the bar 3. Should it be desirable to tilt the bottle to any extent it is slid toward the end 4 of the bar 3 where the twisted portion tends to tilt the carrier with the bottle upwardly and pour out the content-s. The peg 11 is then placed in the hole 10 to prevent the carrier 5 from being accidentally knocked off.
It willbe seen that should the person make any little motions that will be transmitted through the conducting attachments on the bottle, that the carrier will slightly oscillate and take care of the pull on the bottle and thereby prevent the tube or its equivalent from being pulled out. The particular advantage of the bent part 6 of the slide 3 is that should the set screw 7 become unloosened it will keep the bar in position because of the clamping action of such an arrangement, or it will induce the slide with its carrier and bottle to slip down gradually and prevent any detrimental efiects which would be apt to occur if this device had not been provided.
The general design and arrangement of parts of the forms shown adapt themselves to easy manufacture and provide for many advantages which are particularly desirable in the use for which this holder is intended. It is, of course, understood that this holder can be used on a chair or table put beside the bed of the person that has need of it or in any other convenient way that may suggest itself, but is particularly intended to be used inside a cot or bed under the head or body of an infant as there is less likelihood of it being upset or knocked over while in that position.
Among the advantages of my invention are the adjustability vertically, horizontally and angularly of the device, the provision for eliminating the possibility of severe strains on the tube in the bottle, caused by the actions of the child or other person using it, the feature of preventing the bottle from being accidentally knocked oi? the carrier, the property of tilting the bottle and the prevention of the bottle falling on the head of the person, should the set screw come loose, together with the applicability of the device to practically any location without special provision being made necessary for it.
Obviously while my construction shows but one arm, I anticipate the use of several and also the use of entirely flat ones or ones that are twisted in other parts than those shown in the drawings, and in the holder I anticipate the use of other types of flexible bands than shown, or a type of box for holding the bottle, but I prefer that shown because of its simplicity and in the stem I anticipate other forms of adjustability and I do not wish to limit myself in any way other than that necessitated by the prior art as many modifications of my construction may be made without departing from the stem, said slide being torsionally bent, a'
carrier for a bottle having teeth for engaging said slide, and a stop for preventing said carrier being knocked off said slide.
2. A bottle holder comprising in combination a main stem having a foot formed on the lower end thereof, a slide vertically and angularly adjustable on said stem, said slide having a portion torsionally bent, a carrier for a bottle having clamps thereon and provided with teeth for engaging said slide, and a stop for preventing said carrier being knocked off said slide.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
