To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, HENRY J SOHMITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Henry, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Coffin- Lids, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to novel means for holding the top or lid of a coffin above and in proximity to the body portion of said coflin.

An important object of this invention is to provide means of the above character, which may be readily adjustable, so that the same can be employed in connection with coffins of different sizes.

A further object of my invention is to provide means of the above character, capable of holding the coffin lid in a desired position and in such a manner that the same will not be liable to accidental displacement.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device for holding the coffin lid, the same being shown applied to the coffin for properly supporting its lid, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device.

In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of a cofiin of any preferred or well known type, having a cover or lid 2. Each end of the cover or lid 2 is supported by a device 8, having detachable connection with the body portion 1, as shown. The device 3 comprises a preferably cylindrical upstanding tubular body portion 4 or shaft structure, in the upper end of which is longitudinally movably mounted a shaft 5, having the upper end thereof curved, as shown at 6, for engagement with the upper longitudinal edge of the cover or lid 2; The curved end 6 may preferably be provided with a sleeve 7 formed of rubber, felt or other material. The upper end of the tubular body portion 4 is provided with a sleeve 8, which is rigidly secured thereto by any suitable means, and a thumb-screw 9 is disposed to operate within openings formed through the sleeve 8 and lower end portion 11 thereof bent at an an-.

gle to the shaft 10, as shown. The end portion 11 is provided near the free end thereof with a screw threaded opening formed therethrough for receiving a thumb screw 12, carrying a head or casting 18 swiveled to the end of the thumb-screw 12, as shown. The tubular body portion 4 is provided at its lower end with a sleeve 13*, which is rigidly secured thereto by any suitable means. The sleeve 13 and the tubular body portion are provided with registering openings for receiving a thumb screw 14*, adapted to clamp the shaft 10 in adjustment at different po sitions with relation to the tubular body portion 4. The lower portion of the tubular body portion 4 is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 15 formed therethrough, within which is disposed a pin 16, having rigid connection with the shaft 10. From the description of the above referred to parts, it is obvious that the shaft 10 may be moved longitudinally within the tubular body portion, but cannot be rotated therein. The tubular body portion 4 isbent slightly at a point approximately "midway of its ends, and at this point said tubular body portion is provded with openings 14, for receiving a shank 15 of a substantially hori- Zontally disposed supporting hook-member 16. The shank 15 is rigidly connected with the tubular body portion 4, as shown at 17. The inner end of the hook-member 16 is curved downwardly, as shown at 18, for receiving the lower longitudinal edge of the top or lid 2. The curved portion 18 of the hook-member, may preferably be provided with a sleeve 19, formed of rubber, felt or other suitable material.

In the use of the device, the same is arranged near the body portion 1 of the coffin, as shown in Fig. 1. The hook member 16 engages the upper edge of one side of the body port-ion, and the shaft 10 is adjusted longitudinally of the tubular body portion 4, until the head 13 engages the bottom of the coffin. The thumb screw 14 is then operated to clamp the shaft 10 against longitudinal movement. The thumb screw 12 is then properly rotated, whereby the device is clamped to the body portion of the coffin. The top or lid 2 is then placed within the curved portion of the'hook member 16 and the shaft 5 properly adjusted to engage the upper edge of the top or lid 2, as shown in Fig.1. The thumb screw 9 is then rotated to clamp the shaft 5 in this position.

It will be readily seen that the device can be adjusted so that the same may be employed in connection with coffins of different sizes. Parts of the device are also readily separable so that said device may be packed in a small space.

I wish it understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes in the shape,

size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus fully described my invention,

I claim l. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion, means to connect the same to a coflin body, and means connected with said body portion to support the top or lid of the cofiin.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion, means for detachably connecting said body portion with a coflin body, including an adjustable member, means to hold said member in adjust ment at diflerent positions with relation to said body portion, means connected with said body portion and cooperating with the first named means for holding the top or lid of the coffin, and means to hold the last named means in adjustment at different positions with relation to said body portion.

A device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a supporting member connected with said body portion intermediate the ends thereof and adapted for engagement with the upper edge of a coffin body, means including a shaft movably connected with the lower end of said body portion and constructed for engagement with said coffin body to clamp said coflin body against said supporting member, said supporting member serving to support the top or lid of the coffin, and'adjustable means connected with the upper end of said body portion to engage said top or lid for holding the same from displacement.

4. A device of the character described,

comprising a tubular body portion, a supportlng member connected with said tubular body portion intermediate the ends thereof, said supporting member being adapted to engage the upper edge of a coflin body and to support the lid or top of the coffin, means including a shaft having an angularly disposed arm adapted to engage the bottom of said coflin body and being longitudinally adjustably mounted within the lower end of said body portion, to clamp the cofiin body against said supporting member, and a shaft longitudinally adjustably mounted within the upper end of said'tubular body portion and constructed to engage said lid for holding the same against displacement.

A device of the character described, comprising a tubular body portion, a supportlng hook member connected with said tubular body portion intermediate the ends thereof, said hook member bein ada )ted to engage the upper edge of a cofim b0 y and to support the top or lid of said eofiin, a shaft longitudinally movably mounted within the lower end of said tubular body portion and having an angularly disposed arm, means carried by said angularly disposed arm to engage the bottom of said cofiin body to clamp the same against said hook member, a set screw for holding said shaft in adjustment at difierent positions with relation to said tubular body portion, a second shaft having a hook at its outer' end and longitudinally movably mounted within the upper end of said tubular body portion to engage the top or lid of said cofiin, and a set screw to hold said shaft in adjustment at different positions, with relation to said body port-ion.

6. A device of the character described, comprising an upstanding shaft structure, and a supporting member connected with said shaft structure intermediate the ends thereof, said supporting member serving the double function of engaging a cofiin body for connecting the same with said shaft structure and supporting the coffin lid or top.
