SURGICAL-INSTRUMENT HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,362, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed April '28, 1887. Serial No. 236,423.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN It. HAMIL- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instrument-.
Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for holding surgical and like instruments in position while in use.
The primary object of the invention is the production of a holder for rectal speculums which will obviate the difficulty usually experienced in maintaining the instrument in the desired position during use; and the invention consists, generally, in an upright stem attached to an operating-table by a clamp, and vertically as well as axially adjustable, and supporting an adjustable lateral arm which hasa hinge-joint, and is provided with aswiveled clamp on its end for holding the instrument.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- V Figure 1 shows aside elevation ofthe holder attached to a table and supportinga specu lum by clamping its flange. Fig. 2 is a top view of the extreme portion of the holder-arm and its clamp and of a portion of a speculum held by the clamp. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the end of the arm, showing the swivel-joint of the clamp, and showing also the parts of thejointin detail. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the head of the stem, showing the mode of supporting'and fastening the lateral arm.

Around hole extendinglongitudinally through the clamp-body receives the stem A, which is also round, and therefore capable of being turned or slid to adjust it; and a set-screw, d, is made to hold the stem from slipping or turnmg.

Into the projecting portion of the sleeve is inserted the head of the clamp stock t, which has a circular groove, j, and a pin, 70, is inserted into the groove through a pin-hole, l, in the sleeve, and a collar, m, on the stock t abuts the end of the sleeve. The joint is thus made firm, while axial movement is permitted the clamp-stock.
The clamp N is composed of the jaw 12, formed on the end of the stock t, and the jaw a, hinged to the stock, and a clamping'screw, 0, inserted through an oblongs lot in thehinged jaw and engaging in a threaded hole in the fixed jaw.

It will be obvious from the foregoing description thatthe devicchaving been attached to a table, as described, its holding-clamp N can readily be moved to any point within the range of its movement and made to hold an instrument in fixed position at the place of ad justment by the tightening of the several screws, as described.

1. A holder for instruments, comprising a main stem, a clamp for adjustably attaching the same to a fixed object, a longitudinallyadjustable arm supported on said stem, a joint in said arm, a binding-screw therefor, and
a swiveled instrulnent-holding clamp carried arm, a sciow for tightening the same, and a on the end of said arm, substantially as set clamp on the end of said arm adapted to hold forth. v an instrument, substantially as set forth.
