UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENNO VOM EIGEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO AUG. GOERTZ & 00., A
CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BAG-FRAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNO VOM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BagFrames; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to bag-frames; and, this invention relates, more particularly, to a novel means for attaching a leather-covered member to a metal frame with which one of the framesections of the bag-frame is provided, and also to a novel means for securing said metal frame in which the leather-covered member is disposed, securely to the said frame-section.
The invention has for its further object to provide a neat bag-frame section in which a portion of the frame-section has the appearance of being leather-covered, and in which the heads of the greater portion of the rivets by means of which the bag-portion is secured to the frame-sections, are completely hidden from view.
Other objects of this invention not at this 7 time more particularly enumerated will be clearly evident from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With these various objects in View, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a bag-frame illustrating one embodiment of the principal features of the present invention, one side-portion of the bag-frame being represented as being broken away; Fig. 2 is a Specification of Letters Patent.

transverse detail section, on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 2-2 of said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow 00,- Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section, taken on line 3-3 of said Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section, taken on line 44 of said Fig. 1, said Figs. '8 and 4 being also made on enlarged scales. Fig. 5 is a face View of one of the framesections of the bag-frame, with portions of the leg-members of the frame-section shown broken away, said view illustrating in connection therewith, a face view of the metal frame in which the leather-covered member is mounted, said member, however, being omitted from this view; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of said metal frame, taken centrally therethrough; Fig. 7 is a face view of the leather-covered member, showing a portion of said member provided with the leather coverings; and Fig. 8 is a central longitudinal section of the member represented in said Fig. 7.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1, indicates the complete bag-frame, the same comprising a pair of hinged or pivotally connected bag-frame sections 2 and 3. The frame-section 2 is provided with the usual rightangled flange or projection 4:, and, similarly, the frame section 3 is provided with the usual rightangled flange or project-ion 5, the leg-portions or members 6 of the frame-section 3 being provided with suitably formed openings or perforations, as 7. Suitably secured upon the upper end-portions of said legmembers 6 and located directly over the central member 8 of the frame-section 8, (see the dotted outline in Fig. 5 of the drawings,) is a metal frame 9, said frame being surrounded upon the marginal edgeportions by a bead or other suitably raised element 10. One manner of securing said metal frame 9 in position, is by means of lips or tongues 11 which are forced rearwardly from the body of said frame, said lips or tongues being passed through the said openings or perforations 7 and being bent upon the backs of said leg-portions 6, and secured against the marginal edge-portions 12 of said leg-portions or members 6, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 21have the planes-of their faces angularly of the drawings. The mouth-portions of the bag, which are indicated by the reference-character 13, are secured to the framesection 2 by means of an inlay l4: and the rivets or pins 15, and to the frame-section 3 by means of an inlay 16 and the rivets or pins-l7 some :of the said-rivets or pins 17 being also arranged in the perforations or holes 18 with which the previously mentioned metal frame 9 is provided, so as to provide an additional means for securing said frame 9 in its position directly over the central member 8 of the said framesection 3. The said metal frame 9 is also provided with a series of suitably disposed openings or holes, as 19 and 20, and a retaining web or bridge-like member 21 between each pair of said openings or holes 19 and 20, said retaining webs or bridge-like members being struck up from the metal body of said frame 9, and extending forwardly fromthe face of said body. As shown in Figs. 3 and 6 of the'drawings, the said retaining webs or bridge-like members disposed with relation to theplane of the face of the frame 9, the highest portion of'each web or member 21 being at the opening or hole 19, thereby providing a large receiving opening or entrance beneath each -web or bridge-like member, for the purposes to be presently more fully described, and the lowest edge-portion of each web or bridge-like member being at the opening or hole 20, which arrangement serves to provide a perfectand a more efficient retaining edge, as will also be presently more particularly set forth.
The reference-character 22 indicates thearound the marginal edge-portions ofsaid member 22, being suitably secured to the said member in any well-known manner.
As shown, the said member 22 may be slightly dished, although this is not necessary, and is of such size and marginal configuration so that when it is placed in the metal frame 9, the bead or raised element 10 of'said frame 9 will surround the said.
leather-covered member, substantially in 'themanner illustrated in said Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive. That the said member 22 may be positively mounted upon and secured tothe. said metal frame 9, the said member 22 has struck up from its body a series of rearwardly extending and 'angularly formed retaining lugs or fingers, as 24:, said lugs or fingers beingpeculiarly bent, substantially as shown in said Figs?) and 8 of the drawing, each lug or finger being also provided upon its free end-portion with an inwardly projecting;v hook-shaped end 25. In assembling these parts, the said hook-shaped ends of the fingers 21 are first inserted in the respective openings or holes 19 of the metal frame 9, and then by sliding the member 22 upon said metal frame 9, 1n the direction of the arrow y in said Fig. 6, each hookshaped end 25 readily entering the large recelvmg opening at the highest point of the respective webs or bridge-like members 21. By continuing the sliding movement in the direction of said arrow 3/, the said fingers 24 are passed directly behind the said webs or bridge-like members 21, until the hookshaped ends 25, of the retaining-lugs or fingers 2 1 each become arranged directly over an opening or hole 20, so that the hookshaped ends 25 when pressed down into said holes or opening will be positively brought into holding engagement with the retaining edge-portions of the respective webs or bridge-like members 19, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Of course it will be evident, that when the said leathercovered member 22 has in the above stated manner been secured to the metal frame 9, said member serves also as a means for hidmg the rivet-heads or pins 17 from view, thereby providing a neat and sightly bagframe, as is self-evident.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as Well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
1 I claim:
