Description

- R. C. ROBINSON.
CUFF BUTTON.
APPLIOATION FILED 111111. 31, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUPERT C. ROBINSON, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO MAURICE E. BARRIERE, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CUFF-BUTTON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUPERT O. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cuff-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cuff buttons, and relates more particularly to buttons for use with cuffs of the link type.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel form of button of this type in which the button can be positioned without the necessity of introducing the heads of the button through the button holes of the cuff.
The invention has for its further object a cuff button which can be easily and quickly placed in position and removed by a simple sliding movement of one of the heads.
Further and other objects will later be set forth and of themselves manifested.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, some of the parts being broken away and shown in section.
The button is composed of a head 1 which has a tubular stem 2 secured thereto at right angles. The shank 3 of the button is of V- shape, one end being cut away as at 1 and rigidly secured to the head 1 on the rear face of the latter. The opposite end of the shank 3 is formed with an integral tubular stem 5 which projects on opposite sides of said shank end and is in alinement with the stem 2 carried by the head 1. The button further includes a second head 6 which is smaller than the head 1 and which is secured to the stem 7 the latter carrying a pin 8. The pin 8 slides through the hollow stems 2 and 5 and bridges the space between the inner ends of said hollow stems. The head 6 is preferably formed of a piece of metal which is bent over in the form of a curve to provide an opening 9 which receives the outer end of the hollow stem 5 as clearly depicted in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A coiled spring 10 surrounds the stem 7 of the pin 8 and has one end abutting the inner end of pin 8 and its opposite end abutting the closed end 11 of the hollow stem 5. Said closed end 11 of the hollow stem 5 is per Specification of Letters Patent.

forated to receive the shank 7 of pin 8. The ends of the cuff when brought together are received in the space between the legs of the V-shaped shank 3, the pin 8 having first been withdrawn so as to permit the ends of the cuff to be introduced in the space between the inner ends of the hollow stems 2 and 5, said inner ends of the stems 2 and 5 being brought to aline with the alining button holes of the cuffs, after which the head 6 is released and the pin 8 by virtue of the spring 10 forces said pin through the button holes and into the tubular stem 2, thus holding the button securely in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cuff button, a V-shaped shank, a tubular stem secured to each end of said shank, one of the stems having a closed outer end, a head rigidly secured to the other of said stems, a pin slidingly received in said latter stem, said stems having their inner ends spaced apart, and said pin normally bridging the space between said stems, a stem carried by the pin, said pin stem being received in the first of said hollow stems and passed through the closed end of the lat-ter through an opening provided therefor, a coil spring surrounding the pin stem and abutting the pin at one end and the closed end of the tubular stem at its opposite end, and a second head carried by the pin stem and having an opening to slidingly receive the adjacent tubular stem.
2. In a cuff button, a V-shaped shank, a tubular stemsecured to each end of said shank, a head rigidly secured to the outer end of one of said stems, said stems having their inner ends spaced apart, and a spring pressed pin sliding in the hollow stem and normally bridging said space therehetween, said spring pressed pin having a head on its other end.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUPERT O. ROBINSON.
