uurrn STATES PATENT oFFioE.
GEORGE MEADE CHARLES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FOUNTAIN-COMB.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, GEORGE MEADE CHARLES, citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Combs,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of devices described in the LettersPatent granted to me, on the 27th day of September, 1910, No. 971,250; and has for its object to simplify and cheapen the construction of same, as well as to provide means for holding the perforated plate, or valve in closed position, except at such time as the operator shall will otherwise.
The nature of my improvements will be readily understood by referring to the drawings, whereon Figure 1, is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4 perspective view of the valve of the device.
On the drawing the letter A designates the liquid reservoir, preferably cylindrical in form, with a semi-cylindrical depression, or trough 6 extending the full length thereof. The said depression or trough forming the bottom of the device is provided throughout its longitudinal center with perforations 0, for the outflow of liquid from the reservoir. The opposite ends of the reservoir are provided, respectively, with heads D, E, each head having, near its lower-edge, an outwardly projecting sleeve f, 9. One of the said sleeves, say f, is formed with a closed outer end, the other sleeve 9 being open throughout its whole length.
The aforesaid sleeves'f g are adapted to receive, respectively, the stems h i of a perforated plate, or valve 70 which is of less length than the reservoir, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that it may have an endwise movement therein. In cross-section the valve 70 has its under surface to conform with the inner surface of the depression, or trough b and adapted to fit snugly against same; and the upper surface of the valve is made to conform with the circle of the in- Specification of Letters Patent.

. described.
A coil-spring Z is fitted over the inner valve-stem h by which the valve is normally kept closed and the outer projecting end of the valve-stem i is screw-threaded and provided with a nut m, capable of being adjusted by the operator, so that the valve can be pressed inward, only to the extent of its openings registering with the openings of the reservoir.
Particular attention is called to the construction of the valve is, the end-stems of which project from points near the curved bottom thereof, whereby the valve is prevented from rocking, thus insuring the perforations of the valve being kept vertical and in line with the perforations of the reservoir.
With proper shampooing liquid the device may be used for cleaning the heads of individuals, or with other liquids or oompounds, it may be used on horses, dogs, and other animals for ridding same of bugs or other annoying insects.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fountain comb, comprising aliquid reservoir having a longitudinal extension, trough shape in cross-section, provided with a longitudinal line of perforations, a valve plate longitudinally slidable in the trough shape extension, said valve plate being provided with perforations adapted to register with the perforations in said extension, and means for normally holding the valve plate in out-off position.
2. A fountain comb, comprising a liquid reservoir having end bearing sleeves and a longitudinal extension, trough shape in cross-section, provided with a longitudinal line of perforations and projecting teeth, a
Valve plate adjusted in said extension, said valve plate being provided With end projeotions sitting in the bearing-sleeves and In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of April A. D. 1911.
with perforations adapted to register With GEORGE MEADE CHARLES the perforations in the extension, and a Witnesses: spring for normally holding the Valve plate H. N. JENKINS,
in closed position. S. M. JENKINS.
