G. M. CHARLES.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.

FOUNTAIN-COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911,
Application filed June 7, 1911. Serial No. 831,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MEADE CHARLES, citizen of the United States, residing at' Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Oombs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that class of combs generally termed fountain combs; and consists of a telescopic liquid-container or reservoir in which the inner member, which is spring-pressed, is operated to supply the li uid, through the medium of the teeth, to t e scalp and hair of the person usi'llpg the comb, and to cut off the supply at w One of the chief objects of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive comb, of the type mentioned, for use in shampooin and otherwise treating 'the scalp and hair, or, it may be used for cleaning horses,
dogs and other animals, suitable liquid compounds being employed for same.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent upon a complete disclosure thereof.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved comb; Fig. 2, a transverse section showing the exit to one of the teeth out off by the inner telescopic member; Fig. 3,a similar view, showing the exit in the inner member in register with the exit in the outer member, whereby liquid may be supplied to the tooth, and Fig.
4 an end elevation of the outer member.
the aperture 4 is a filling-tube 6, the lower end of which extends into the slot 5 to direct the longitudinal movement of the inner member, and to limit the extent of said movement, the filling-tube being in communication with the interior of said inner member, which, in conjunction with a small portion of the outer member, serves as a reservoir for the liquid. The outer member is provided with a suitable number of teeth 7, and with a number of small perforations .8, one for each tooth. The inner member is provided with a corresponding number of similar perforations 9 arranged to register with the erforations 8, each of which is arranged lmmediately in rear of a tooth, so that the liquid will be supplied directly to each tooth. The inner member is normally held in a position to prevent the liquid from flowing through the perforations 8 by a compressible sprin 10, but when it is desired to cause the liquid to flow through the perforations 8 it is only necessary to press upon the closed ends of the inner and outer members until the perforations 8- and 9 register, and as soon as the pressure is removed the tensioned force of the spring will return the inner member to normal position, cutting ofi the flow of the liquid from the reservoir.
In operation, after the reservoir has been filled by means of the tube 6, a slight pres-' sure on the end of the inner member will cause the perforations 9 and 8 to register, and as the liquid flows therethrough it will follow the curvature of the teeth, as the perforations 8 are arranged in close proximity to the base of the teeth, the curvature of the teeth therefore is an important feature of my invention, as the flow of the liquid is directed thereby to the point of the teeth, thus dispensing with the employment of tubular teeth.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim,is
A fountain comb, comprising outer and inner tubular members, the outer member being provided with teeth and with perforations adjacent to said teeth, and the inner member with perforations adapted to register with the perforations in the outer memreeeeie her, said inner member being provided with autometically close the perforations in the e slot and the outer member with e filling outer member.
tube extending inteseid slot, whereby the Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set movement of the inner member is longitumy hard this 5th de of June A. D. 1911.

where y the inner member may be longitu- Witnesses: dinelly moved to cause the perforations in. H..N. Jemima;
the respective members to register meet to S, M. Jemmrie.
