Description

J. GOGIL.
WIND SHIELD.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 23,
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.

COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH C0,. WASHINGTON. D. c.
JOSEPH COGIL, OF CENTRAL CITY, NEBRASKA.
WIND-SHIELD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH (loan, of Gen tral City, in the county of Merrick and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful find-Shield, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved Wind shield used by parties using automobiles and the like, and in its generic nature the invention comprises a portable wind shield having provisions for supporting the same on the shoulders of the user, and in its more specific nature the invent-ion resides in a body frame having a covering to protect the body of the wearer, a transparent member carrying frame hinged to the body frame to be adjustable to different angles with relation thereto, and adjustable hangers including hooks to fit over the shoulders of the user, by means of which hangers the body frame and its attached parts are suspended in po sition on the wearer.
More subordinately the invention also includes those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the frame and hangers with the frame covering removed.
In the drawings like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures.
In constructing my invention, I provide a body frame 1 of substantially U-shape, the arms of which terminate in eyes 2 through which the hinge pin 11 projects. The hinge pin 11 is provided with a stop 12 adjacent to each eye 2 so as to keep the arms of the frame 1 separated the required distance, the arms being braced adjacent to the hinge pin 11 by a rod 3 which is secured at 4 to the arms of the frame 1, adjacent to the eyes 2.
5 designates a pair of brackets secured to the arms of the frame 1 and diverging rearwardly, the brackets 5 being perforated to receive the hanger rods 7 which are secured to the brackets 5 by set screws 10. The hanger rods 7 are bent laterally as at 8 and merge with shoulder engaging hooks 9.
16 is the head or transparent member Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Oct. 3, 1911. Serial No. 616,548.
in eyes 15 which receive the hinge pin 11,
and are pressed into more or less tight frictional engagement with the eyes 2 by the 1 thumb screws 14 of the threaded ends 13 of -the pin 11 so that the angular relation between the frames 1 and 16 may be adjusted at will.
18 is the cover which incloses the frame 16 and merges with the cover section 20 that incloses the frame 1. The cover 18-20 may be of any approved construction, and I do not wish to limit myself to any particular material. The cover section 18 that incloses the frame 16 is provided with an opening 17 in which a transparent member 19 is held. The transparent member 19 may be of celluloid, mica or glass, or any other suitable material as may be found convenient in practice.
In use the device is attached to the operator as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The hooks 9 pass over the operators shoulder and by adjusting the position of the rods 7 in the brackets 55, the transparent member 19 may be brought into alinement with the vision of the operator, and by loosening the nuts 14 the frame section 16 may be swung to any angle as may be found desirable by the user, after which the frame may be clamped in position by again tightening the nuts 14.
From the foregoing description, it is thought the complete construction, and operation of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. It will be seen that I have provided a very simple and effectively constructed wind shield that can be manufactured at a low cost, and can be easily worn by the operator while driving the machine, and detached from the operator when he desires to do so. Furthermore the device is made adjustable so as to fit any user.
lVhile I have described my device as par ticularly adapted for use by automobile operators, it may, with or without slight modification be equally well adapted for use by aviators.
hat I claim is 1. In a wind shield, a body frame and a head frame, means for hingedly connecting said frames together, a frame covering for said frames, a transparent member carried by the frame covering over said head frame, and means for suspending the aforesaid parts on a user.
2. In a Wind shield, a body frame and a head frame, means for hingedly connecting said frames together, a frame covering for said frames, a transparent member carried by the frame covering over said head frame, and means for suspending the aforesaid parts on a user, said last named means including body engaging members and means for sustaining said frames on said body engaging members.
3. In a wind shield, a covered body frame and a covered transparent member carrying head frame hingedly secured to said body frame, body engaging supports and adjustable connections between saidsup'ports and frames for mounting said frames on the body of the user.
4. A body frame, a head frame hingedly and adjustably secured to said body frame, a frame covering over said frames, said covering having an opening and a transparent member carried by said covering at said opening, a pair of bracket members carried by-said body frame, and a body engaging hook adjustably mounted in each of said bracket members.
