Description

L. PFOUTS;
LEGGING. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24, 1911.
Patented 00:. 3,1911.
Witnesses LEANDER PFOUTS, OF BEACH CITY, OHIO.
LEGGING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEANDER ProU'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beach City, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to leggings made of canvas, leather or other comparatively soft and pliable material, stiffened with a strip of metal inserted along the overlapping edges of the legging; and the object of the improvement is to provide a shield on the lower end of the inner edge of the legging to prevent the pressure from the lower end of the stiffening strip from injuring or abrading the foot or shoe of the wearer. In leggings of this character, the stiffening strip is usually extended to or near the loweredge of the legging, and, although the strip may be and usually is incased within the canvas, leather or other similar material of which the legging is made; nevertheless the pressure of the canvas by the lower end of the stiffening strip against the foot or shoe of the wearer, assisted by the rubbing of the parts by the walking or riding of the wearer, serves to injure or abrade the foot or shoe at this particular point of contact. This difliculty is avoided by providing a shield of metal or other hard material on the inner side of the legging at the point in question, thus protecting the foot or shoe of the wearer from the objectionable pressure and rubbing caused by the lower end of the stiffening strip. This general object of the improvement, together with the particular features of construction of the shield, is attained by the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a legging, showing the shield applied thereto; Fig. 2, a fragmentary perspective view of the legging, showing the contact portion of the shield applied thereto; Fig. 3, a fragmentary sect-ion, showing the arrangement of the parts with the shield in place; and Fig. 4, a detached perspective view of the shield.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The legging 1, being made of cloth, canvas, leather or other suitable material, is provided with the stiffening strips 2 which are inserted in and along the edges of the leg Specification of Letters Patent.

ging which overlap along the side of the leg when the legging is worn, and the legging is usually fastened by means of the loops 3 secured one above and the other below on the outer side of the inner edge, and the locking tongues 4 secured on the inner side of the outer edge, and adapted to be inserted in the loops by .a fieXure of the outer edge and the inserted strip.
The shield 5 is made of a strip of sheet metal, preferably somewhat wider than the stiffening strip, and is bent in the form of a flattened U fitting over the outer and inner sides and around the lower edge of the legging to embrace the lower end portionof the stiffened inner edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. For the purpose of securing the shield to the legging, the outer plate 6 of the shield is preferably provided with the upwardly extending tongue 7, which is adapted to enter and engage inside the lower loop 3, and this tongue may be slightly deflected outward as shown more particularly in Fig. 4, so that the locking tongue 4: will enter the loop behind the shield tongue.
The inner plate 8 of the shield, which c011- sti'tutes the contact or protecting portion thereof, is preferably extended upward some distance beyond the end of the other tongue and is provided at its upward end with the lateral tangs 9 which are adapted to be bent outward and inserted through the material of the legging on each side of the stifiening strip and then clamped inward to secure the shield in position, as shown at 9 in Fig. 1. The inner plate of the shield is extended laterally and longitudinally to completely cover the inner side of the legging opposite to and overlapping in all directions the lower end of the stiffening strip, and it is evident that the large extent of the plate and its smooth hard surface serves to distribute the rubbing contact of the legging at this point, caused by the pressure on the lower end of the stiffening strip, as to avoid any injurious or undesirable friction therefrom. Furthermore, the outer plate of the shield and the bend around the lower edge of the logging serves to protect the inclosed portion of the legging from the wear of use.
It will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention to the particular form or fastening of the shield set forth herein, but the same have been preferred for convenience in applying and securing the shield to the legging. And furthermore, the inner plate of the shield is preferably laterally convexed to present a rounded face to the foot or shoe of the wearer.
I claim:
1. A metal shield for a legging having a stifiening strip in its edge and a fastening loop 011 its outer side, composed of a strip bent U-shaped to form an outer and inner plate, the outer plate having a tongue thereon adapted to engage in the loop, and the inner plate having lateral tangs on its upper end adapted to be inserted and clamped through the legging around the edges of the stiffening strip.
2. A legging having a stiffening strip in 1ts edge, and a U-shaped metal shield secured on the outer and inner sides of the legging opposite to and overlapping in all directions the lower end of the stiffening strip.
3. A legging having a stiffening strip in its edge, and a metal shield secured on the inner side of the legging opposite to and overlapping in all directions the lower end of the stiffening strip.
