Description
W. H. COLE. COMBINED DOOR HANGER AND TRACK FOR EDGEWISE MOVABLE 9003s. APPLICATION FILED MAR.9, 1911.
' 1,004,746. Patented 0 u3,1911. .1i|@l II' Ill WILLIAM H. COLE, OF CHARLES CITY, IOWA.
COMBINED DOOR-HANGER AND TRACK FOR EDGEWISE-MOVABLE DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 9, 1911.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.
Serial No. 613,278.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charles City, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined DoorHanger and Track for Edgewise-Movable Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined door hanger and track for edgewise movable doors.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of roller carriages and an improved construction of track adapted to receive the carriages whereby the door is movably supported and the carriages protected from the weather.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of part of a barn door showing the application of the invention parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a rear view of one of the carriages; Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of one of the hangers forming part of the carriage.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the track of my improved support said track being preferably formed from heavy sheet metal bent to form a vertical attaching flange 2, an inclined cover plate 3, a vertical front or outer wall 4, an inwardly projecting horizontal track rail 5 and an upwardly projecting guide flange 5"" formed on the inner edge of the track rail. The attaching flange 2 is secured to the side of the barn or other support by screws or other fastening devices. By thus constructing and arranging the'track it will be seen that the same forms a protective housing as well as a track rail for the door supporting devices.
Adapted to be engaged with the track rail 4L are door supporting carriages 6 said carriages comprising hangers 7 formed from rods bent into substantially U-shaped frames.
The looped portion of each hanger frame is bent laterally at substantially right angles to form the door engaging portion 8 of the hanger. The free ends of the frame are bent outwardly at right angles to form hearing studs or pintles 9 on which are rotatably mounted supporting rollers'lO. The outer ends of the studs 9 are connected and the rollers 10 held in position thereon by plates 11 said plates bracing the ends of the hangers and preventing the same from spreading, as well as holding the rollers 10 thereon.
The door 12 is pivotally connected to the hangers by straps 13 adapted to embrace the top edge of the door and which are bent midway between their ends to form bearings 14 adapted to be engaged with the door attaching portions 8 of the hangers. The ends of the straps after forming the bearings 14 are bent outwardly and downwardly at right angles and are bolted or otherwise secured to the sides of the door thus loosely connecting the same to the hanger whereby the door is movably suspended from the track and may be readily opened and closed by a slight push or pull in the desired direction.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A door support comprising a track, door supporting carriages comprising hangers constructed of rods bent to form an offset U-shaped door engaging portion and right angular bearing studs, extending in the same direction and in a plane parallel with said U-shaped member, rollers rotatably mounted on said studs adapted to engage and travel on said track, and means to connect said hangers with a door.
2. A door support comprising a track, door supporting carriages, comprising hangers constructed of rods bent to form an ofi-set U-shaped door engaging portion and right angular bearing studs, rollers rotatably mounted on said studs and adapted to engage and travel on said track, and straps In testimony whereof I have hereunto set bent to form hearings adapted to be pivotmy hand in presence of two subscribing witally engaged with the door engaging pornesses.
tions of said hangers, said straps having WILLIAM H. COLE. their ends secured to the opposite sides of Witnesses: the door whereby the latter is hingedly se- M. W. ELLIS,
