ammo@ @M m m55/Ww UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ROLLINS PENN, 0F DALLAS, TEXAS.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. PENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of instruments primarily adapted for striping vvehicles and sign lettering commonly known to the trade as brushes, and the primary object of the invent-ion is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, which is made up of a single piece of suitable material, which is provided with a fountain adapted to contain the liquid for painting, and which may be easily adjusted so as to provide for the various sizes of lines or markings desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the improved brush adjusted to produce a light line or marking. Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the brush adjusted to make a heavier line or mark. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the manner in which the brush may be employed for making a heavy line or marking. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device taken through its reservoir. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the device taken upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view of the blank from which the brush is formed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral l designates the improved brush. This brush is constructed of a single strip of iattened bendable material, and when it is in its folded position, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings comprises a marking point 2, reservoir 3, and a handle 4.
A blank from which the device is formed is illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and it will be noted that the strip of flattened material from which the brush is formed has one of its ends substantially W-shaped to provide the points 5 and 6. The blank is bent upon the dotted line indicated in the said figure, and the reservoir 3 is provided by bulging the opposite sides of the said blank for a suitable distance, the end of the reservoir terminating in the flattened handle portion 4. The points 5 and 6 are bent inwardly toward each other, so that the said points normally contact with each other. The reservoir it will be noted is closed by the inturned nibs or points 5 and 6, and it being understood that the brush being formed of bendable material, the said points 5 and 6 may be separated from each other a suitable distance to provide for the marking of the various sized lines, as illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3 of the drawing. It is to be noted that the open mouth of the reservoir 3 is always arranged at the top of the butts and that the nibs or points 5 and 6 are open adjacent their points of connection with the closed floor or lower portion of the reservoir 3, the said opening of the points being effected through the medium of a slarpened implement such as a knife or the Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A marking brush for the purpose set forth constructed of a single blank of bendable material, the said blank having one of its ,ends substantially W-shaped to provide a pair of V-shaped points, the blank being bent centrally of the W-shaped end to provide an elongated reservoir which is normally closed by forcing the edges of the points into engagement with each other, the portion of the blank beyond the reservoir being flattened to provide a handle, all substantially as and for the pur ose set forth.
In testimon whereof I a x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ROLLINS PENN.
Witnesses:
