INVENTOR JOIfi/WZIMWWWZV ATTORNEYS I UNITE JOSEPH E. WENT/IAN, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
PLATE-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
Application filed February 25, 1911. Serial No. 610,741.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPrr E. WVENMAN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resiexact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of plate lifter or detachable handle for articles, especially those which are too hot to be readily handled without the interposition of some such tool.
An object of my invention is to provide a utensil having parts, which may readily be constructed from metal wire without the use of any connecting pivots.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the relative parts that they may be mutually braced.
A still further object of my invention is to so construct the parts that they may be readily and removably locked in position.
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a preferred embodiment of my plate lifter; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same.
My improved plate lifter'comprises two parts A and B, preferably made of some strong metallic wire, one part being movable relatively to the other by means of a loose hinge connection, whereby the plate is grasped between movable jaws. The member A is constructed from one piece of wire doubled upon itself, the loop being bent into the substantially rectangular gripping handle 3. The two members are wrapped about each other at 41, and extend forward parallel with each other, as shown at 5, to form between the same, a guideway 6. One of the members at 7 is bent about itself to form an eye 8, and then extends forwardly in the plane of the part 5 of the member, to constitute the arm 2, the outer end of which is flattened, as shown at 9, and is bent slightly downward to conform to the outside of the plate C. The other branch 5 of the bent wire is passed through the eye 8, is slightly bent outward, as shown at 11, and extends diver-gently forward and outward, to form the arm 1, corresponding in construction with the arm 2. The member B likewise is in one piece, one end of which is bent to form a handle 13 corresponding to the handle 3 and disposed in the same plane with said handle. The member B is bent intermediate its length into a substantially U-shaped guiding element 1 1, which extends through the guideway 6 and is held in said guideway by the contacting of a recessed portion 15 in one of the arms of the U with the part 7 The arm of the U-shaped member, opposite the depressed portion 15, is bent into a substantially S-shape 16, which passes through the eye 8 and projects forward to form a top engaging prong 17, centrally disposed between the arms 1 and 2, and having a downwardly-inclined engaging hook 18 adapted to contact with the top of the plate, thereby gripping the same between the flat portions 9 and the hook 18. It will be seen that the S-shapcd member 16 has free play within the eye 8, and that the U-shaped extending member 141 prevents any side play between these members and the dc ression 15 prevents any vertical play or oosening of the members.
It is noted that by the above construction, each member is made continuous of one length of wire; that there are no drilled joints or other expensive construction; that the parts are merely twisted upon themselves and flattened out at one point, to thereby afford a relatively chea and durable locking construction. Furt ier it will be seen that the member B is automatically locked to the member A, as one side of the guideway is forced into the recess 15 by a slight pressure on the members 3 and 13, and by a slight extension of the handles the handles A and B are readily separated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A plate lifter, comprising two parts hinged together, one of said parts bent upon itself to form a handle portion and again bent upon itself to form an eye, the portions between said bent portions forming a guideway between the same, and a coacting part passing through said eye, to form a hinged connection With said first-mentioned part, said second-mentioned partbeing bent through said guideway and the end of said secondmentioned part bent upon itself to form a handle coacting Wlth the 10 first-mentioned handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
' JOSEPH E. WVENMAN.
