Description

R. BAILEY. MOUTHPIEGE FOR HORNS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 5, 1911.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
RALPH BAILEY, OF MARION, INDIANA.
MOUTI-IPIECE FOR- HORNE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
Application filed January 5, 1911. Serial No. 600,991.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces for Horns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mouth pieces for horns.
One object of the invention is to provide a mouth piece having means whereby the same may be automatically adjusted to facilitate the production of high and low tones without straining or fatigue on the part of the performer.
Another object is to provide a mouth piece of this character which will be simple, strong and durable in construction, efiicient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of my improved mouth piece; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the cup of the mouth piece with the adjustable lip engaging ring removed. Fig. 4; is a side view partly in section of the adjustable lip engaging ring removed from the cup of the mouth piece.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the cup or hollow body portion of the mouth piece, said body portion having on its inner end the usual tubular attaching stem 2 with which the interior of the cup is connected by a reduced throat 3. In the outer edge of the cup is formed an annular groove or recess 4:.
Arranged on the outer end of the cup 1 is an adjustable yieldingly supported mouth or lip engaging ring 5 the inside diameter of which is of such size as to correspond with or form a continuation of the inner surface of the cup. On the inner edge of the ring is formed an annular inwardly extending flange 6, which is adapted to slidably engage the recess or groove 1. The inner side of the flange is offset or recessed where the same engages the adjacent side of the groove 4 whereby when the ring is depressed the inner surface of the same will be flush with the inner surface of the cup.
I11 the inner edge of the flange 6 is formed an annular groove 7 and in the outer side of the flange is formed a series of short longitudinally disposed grooves 8. Arranged in the groove or recess 1 is a coiled spring 9 which engages the groove 7 and forces the ring 5 outwardly and yieldingly holds the same out in a projected position. The outward movement of the ring is limited and the latter prevented from becoming disengaged from the mouth piece by stop screws 10 which are arranged in the outer side of the mouth piece near its outer end as shown. The inner ends of the screws are engaged with the longitudinal grooves 8 in the outer side of the flange and thereby limit the outward movement of the ring.
On the outer side of the ring 5 is formed an annular flange 11 which slidably engages the outer side of the cup and forms an outer guide for the ring whereby the latter is prevented from binding and caused to slide easily and freely on the outer end of the cup when pressed a ainst the lips thereby increasing or diminishing the dimensions of the cup.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A mouth piece for horns comprising a cup having in its outer edge an annular groove, a lip-engaging ring having on its inner edge an annular flange slidably seated in the annular groove of the cup, said annular flange being provided in its inner edge with an annular groove and in its periphery with a series of short longitudinal slots, a spring seated partly in the annular groove of the cup and partly in the annular groove of the lip-ring flange and tending to press the lip-ring outward, and a series of stop screws threaded through the outer wall of the annular groove of the cup and engaging v in the annular groove of the cup, said annular flange being provided in its inner edge with an annular groove and in its periphery with series of short longitudinal slots, a spring seated partly in the annular groove of the cup and partly in the annular groove of the lip-ring flange and tending to press the lip-ring outward and a series of stop screws threaded through the outer wall of the annular groove of the cup and engaging .in the short longitudinal slots, the lip-engaging ring being rabbeted on its inner surface whereby said inner surface will be flush with the inner surface of the cup and fur ther provided with an outside annular flange forming a groove which embraces the outer wall of the groove of the first named annular flange of the lip-engaging ring.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RALPH BAILEY. lVitness-es JNo. P. CAMPBELL, Orrro B. CAMPBELL.
