Description
0. S. HUNT. SAFETY 1mm FOR comas.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 6, 1911.
1,003,264. Patented pt.12,1911.
[NVENTOR WITNESSES: y I W @MW%% 1 WMQ CECIL S. HUNT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR COIVIBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 6, 1911.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911. Serial No. 625,612.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CECIL S. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combs for personal wear and, has for its particular object, the provision of a simple and efficient article which will present the usual appearance of a comb, but possess the advantage of effectively securing the same against loss or disarrangeme'nt in the hair of the wearer.
In brief, this invention resides in the provision of novel hair clamping means 1novably mounted on a comb and provided with a locking member which performs the dual function of effectively securing the clamping means in operative and inoperative positions and affording at the same time a finger piece for the manipulation thereof by the user.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective showing a comb embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view, part of the comb being shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing more clearly the locking means.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a comb having the customary teeth 2.
8 designates a hair clamping member having the teeth 4 which conform to the shape of the teeth 2 of the comb, though preferably shorter in length, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The clamping member 3 is provided with lateral extensions 5 which are adapted to slide in the keepers 6 secured to the comb 1 by means of rivets or screws, in the customary manner. At the top of the clamping member 3 is also provided a locking arm 7 having adjacent to the comb 1 a projection 8 which is adapted to engage in a notched locking plate 9 secured to the comb. The notches in the plate 9 are so spaced that the teeth of the clamping member 3 and the teeth 2 of the comb will register when the locking arm 7 is moved into engagement with any one of said notches.
In the normal operative position the clamping member 3 will rest in the position in which the projection 8 engages with the central notch in the plate 9. The wearer places the comb in the hair and, by movement of the locking arm 7 transversely of the comb in either direction, causes the hair to be locked in an obvious manner between the teeth 2 and 1 of the comb and clamping member 3, respectively. To remove the comb 6, it is only necessary to move the locking arm 7 so that the projection 8 engages the central notch in the plate 9, thus disengaging the hair.
It will be obvious that the extension of the locking arm 7 beyond the plate 9 affords a convenient means for manipulation of the clamping member 3. v
Having thus fully decribed my invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a comb, a hair clamping member slidably mounted thereon, said member having teeth corresponding with the teeth of the comb and opposite thereto an extension, and a plate secured to the comb having notches therein for engagement with the said extension to lock the clamping member in operative and inoperative positions.
2. In combination with a comb, a sliding hair clamping member having lateral extensions, and teeth corresponding with the teeth of the comb, keepers on said comb in which the lateral extensions of the clamping memher are adapted to move, and means for look ing the clamping member in operative and inoperative positions.
3. In combination with a comb, a sliding hair clamping member having lateral extensions, and teeth corresponding with the teeth of the comb, keepers on said comb in which the lateral extensions of the clamping mem- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature her are adapted to move, a locking arm on in presence of tWo Witnesses. the clamping member having a projection thereon, and a notched plate secured to the CECIL HUNT comb for engagement by the projection Witnesses:
aforesaid to lock the clamping member in HERRMAN RAFETSON,
operative and inoperative positions. JOSEPH A. Pmz,
