Description

(H-titled tatgmwi @Ww- CHARLES GREEN, OE WILMINGTON, 'DELA-WARE.
Leners Paten No.1oo,2s6, dated Ma/rch 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION' OF BARRELS AND PACKAGES new- I'he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o'f the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES GREEN, of Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle, and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Barrels and Packages; and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear,
' and exact descn'ption thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specication, and in Whichv Figure l is a vertical section of a barrel, with my improvement attached;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the additional head;
Figure 3 represents one of the supplementary side strips connected' with the additional heads; and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section on the line c d, fig. 1.
The same parts are denoted by the same letters in all the figures.
The object of this invention is to provide folj the.
safe and easy transpoitation of barrels and packages. It is especially applicable to metal barrels `of large size, such as are used for petroleum, but its use is not contined to vessels of any particular form or material.
A A are two additional heads, made of wood or other material.
These heads may be countersunk, to receive the ends of the barrel, as shown at c 'a in Iig. l, or may be made without the countersink.
' B B are rods of iron or othermaterial, connecting the heads, and fastened in any convenient way.
By applying the additional heads to the ends ofa barrel orpackage, and connecting them with rods, the barrel is protected from injury, and its' transportation is rendered easier.
Battens may be fastened to the additional heads, and notches made in them for convenience in lifting, as shown in fig. 2. These details, however, areno part of my invention.
Supplementary side strips C, fig. 3, may, if necessary, be let into the additional-heads, to support and stiffeu the sides ot' the barrel or other vessel.
What I claim .as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
The'additional heads, connected by rods-or equivaient devices, as and for the purpose described.
' Y 2. The side strips let into or otherwise connected with the additional heads, asand for the purpose de.
scribed.
