t Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 6, 1910. Serial No. 585,589. f
To all whom 1t may concern.
Be it known that I, ACHILL BIPPART, a citizen of the United States residing at 36 Ingraham Place, Newark, county of Essex,
' and State of New Jersey, have invented certector for pencil points, and comprises first,
' a modification of the, cylindrical shell heretofore used to fit-over the pencil point, so
that the same may perform'the functions of a paper cutter 5 and, secondly, a modification of a'peneil" oint" protector'by'combining a;
spring-011p t ere'with having its tongue'an ranged to press upon the bead at the open end of the shell.
The article is formed of a single tubular piece of sheet-metal open atone end' and closed at the other, and having a cylindrical body open at one end in which the end of the pencil'is inserted, and tapered therefrom toward'the opposite end, with\ the edges of and shaped so, he tapered por-- such tapered portion beveled the two edges, which ridge corresponds with the tapered pencil point. The chamber within the cylindrical body is adaptedv to receive the cylindrical portion ofthe pencil,
and the interior of t he tapered portion formsa cham'berto admit the tapered or sharp ened point of the pencil One side of the cylindrical portion 'is'slotted that it may embrace the body of the pencil elastically, and the spring'clip if used has its shankattached to such cylindrical body near its junction with its tapering portlon, preferably in such a position that the clip may extend over the slot to conceal the same, the
point of the clip lyingadjacent to the 0 en mouth of the cylindrical portion, so t at when the pencil'is fitted therein the springclip may be guided to embrace the e'dge of the pocket, as is common in such clips.
The-invention will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in which- Figu pencil protector and paper cutter with a pencil therein; Fig. 2 is a section of, the
same u on the centerline of Fig. 1; Fig. 3;
is an e ge view of the same providedwith the clip Fig. t'isa side view of the comdescribed and represented in the fol re 1 is a side view of the combined clip covering the slot in the protector; Fig. 5 is a. cross section on line in"'Fig; 2, and Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 in Fig. 2, enlarged. I V
a designates-the cylindricalbody of the article with slot bat one side, and c the tapering portion of the article which is flattened to substantially a chisel edge 01 at its extremity and beveled at opposite edges 6 for cutting folded paper, the interior chain "ber of the beveled portion taperingfroni a circular form, as shown in Fig. 6, at its connection with the body a, to a mere slitwhere'the metal is pressed 'together at the ch'isel endr Intermediate to these points the tapering portion is swelled between the :paper cutting edges '6 to forms. chamber 1 to the cylindrical body of the article,jits-foot or shank E being soldered to'the cylindrical" portion where it joins the tapering portion,- and the tongue 70 projecting toward the open mouth ofthe cylindrical body so as to press upon the side of the body at its open end, and clamp the edge of the pocket between Patented Sept. 5, 1911."
bined protector and paper cutter with the In Figs. 3 and 4, a clip is shown attached I the .bead 1:" on such end and the tongue,
when the pencil carrying the protector is placed'i'n the pocket. Fig. 4 shows theclip secured upon the body a at such point a'sltox lie'over the slot b,,thus concealingthe slot great measure.
I The combhed rotector and pap'er is formed cheap y, as it is made of] one tubular sheet-metal iece suitably flati tened for about one-ha f 'itslength to taper. from and stamped to form the aper cuttingv edges thereon, and it is; thus 0 eaplymade, while it confers an-additional and very desirable function, namely, that of cutting folded paper, upon an ordinary pencilprotector. I I do not claim a mere protecting shell having a bead Jo, as I am aware that such a pencil protecting'shell is. old. 1 Having thus set forth the nature of the invention what is claimed herein is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pencil-protector and paper-cutter comprisin a:
gi gle tubular piece of sheet-metal having a cylindrical portion :with an open mouth atone end and taperm from such cylin- -drical portion to a chise edge at the opposite end, and the opposite edges of the tapered portions having integral external cutting edges adapted for cutting folded pa'per, substantially as herein set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a penoil-protector and paper-cutter. comprising a single tubular piece of sheet-metal having a cyllndrical portion with an open mouth at one end and taperin from such cylindrical portion to a chisel edge at the opposite end, and the tapered portion having a central ridge f with integral external cutting edges ber within the ridge between such edges to 15 admit a tapering pencil-point.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set -my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AOHILL BIPPART.
