To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB M. J oHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked part of this specification.
v This invention relates to improvements in tobacco ,pipes and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the inventionis to supplya tobaccopipe having the simple lines of the usual pipe and provided with means located intermediate the mouth-piece and the pipefbowl to prevent particles-of tobacco from being drawn from the bowl into'the mouth and saliva from reaching the pipe bowl. 7
Other advantages of the pipe will appear as I proceed with my specification.

It will thus be apparent that anything drawn into the aperture of the mouth-piece must pass about the lower edge of the batiie plate '16 before it may enter the aperture 15.
The rear end of the shell 15 is closed by an end wall 1 5 provided on its upper edge with a half-round notch 15' which is adapted to receive the front end 14" of thestud 14 when the parts are assembled. One edge of ftothe plug 15, which is adapted to be engaged by a pin or lug l7 projecting radially inward from the cylinder 13- to lock the shell 15 within the cylinder 13; A cylinder of absorbent material 18 is preferably 10- cated in the shell 15, with one end abutting against 'the plug 15, and the other against the end wall 15*- of said shell. From this construction itis apparent that any particles of tobaccothat may be drawn through the aperture 11 of the stem into the space within the'cylinder 13 will impinge against the baffle plate 16*. and drop mto the shell 15, or in the case of the use of the 70 adapted tofit within the cylinder 13.- Said A may be withdrawn and with it the semiabsorbent cylinder, into said cylinder. I claim as my invention 1. In a pipe, in combination with the stem and the mouth-piece, a tubular member closed at its rear end by a wall, said wall being vprovided with an apertured stud having-a rear end engaged within an aperture "in said stem and a front end projecting within said tubular member, aplug secured to said mouth-piece adapted to'be embraced by the forward end of said tubular member, a small tube made integral with said plug opening into the aperture of said mouthpiece and closed at its rear end, said tube having a slot in its lower side forward of said rear closed end, and an open shell made integral with said plug adapted to fit within said tubular member, said shell having an. end' wall provided with a notch adapted to receive the forward end of said stud.
2; -In a pipe, in combination with the stemand the mouth-piece, a tubular member closed at its rear end by a wall, said Iwall being provided with an apertured studhav ing-a rear end screw-threaded into said stem and a, front end projecting within said tubular member, a plug secured to said mouth-piece adapted to be embraced by the forward end of said tubular member, a small tube made integral with said plug opening into the aperture of; saigLmouth-piece and closed at its rear end, said tube havingaa slot in its lower'side forward of said rear closed end, an open shell made integral with said plug adapted to fit within said tubular member, said shell havingan endwall -provided with a notch adapted to receive the forward end of saidstud, said shell being provided on one of its longitudinal edges with a second notch, and a pin or lug made rigid with said tubular member adapted to engage said notch to lock the parts in assembled relation.
3. In a pipe, in combination with the stem and the mouth-piece, a tubular member closed at its rear end by a wall, said wall being provided with an apertured stud having' a rear end screw-threaded into said stem and a front 'end projecting within said tubular membe, a plug secured to said mouth-piece ada ted to be embraced by the forward end of said tubular member, a small tube made integral with said plug openin into the aperture of said mouth-piece an closed at its rear end, said tube having a slot in its lower side forward of said rear closed end, an open shell made inte ml with said plug adapted to fitwithin sai tubular member, said shell having an end wall provided with a notch adapted to receive the forward end of said stud, and means for locking the-parts in assembled relation.
