FASTENER FOR DISPLAY-BOX FRONTS.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 15, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT F. URBAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Highland, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Display-Box Fronts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to fasteners for de tachably connecting transparent fronts to display boxes in which articles of merchandise are packed, the present improvement being of the same type as that illustrated in Letters Patent of the United States No.- 955,563, issued to me April 19, 1910.

The principal object of the present improvement is the production of a display box front fastener suitable for application to display boxes of difierent sizes, and with this object in view the present fastener is so made as to provide for its being readily increased or diminished in length, irrespective of the spring element entering thereinto to adapt the fastener to various sized boxes.

Figure I is a perspective View of a merchandise box having a display front applied thereto and held in position by a pair of my improved fasteners. Fig. II is a perspective view of the detachable claw member entering into the construction of my fastener. Fig. III is a view of the other claw member.

In the accompanying drawings: A designates a merchandise box and B is a transparent box front applied to an open side of the box A. The box front B may be of the well known sectional type shown in the drawings, and which comprises two sections hinged to each other, one of the sections being intended to be held firmly against the box A at its open side by my fasteners, while the other section is freely movable to permit access to the interior of the box. Box fronts of other types than that shown may, however, be utilized and be held by my fasteners; as, for instance, the box front may comprise merely a plain sheet of glass.

Proceeding now to the description of my box front fastener, 1 designates an expansible spring having connected thereto at one end a claw member 2 comprising a body or shank and angle arms 2 connected by an outwardly jutting finger piece 2, the said arms being adapted to be placed in engagement with the front face of the box front B, as shown in the drawings, or is equally applicable to the back wall of the box A. The expansible spring 1 is provided at its end opposite that to which the claw member 2 is attached with an eye 3.

4 designates a chain having one of its ends fitted to the eye 3 of the spring 1 and which is of a length sufficient in connection with the other members of the fastener to render the fastener suitable for use to hold a dis play front to a merchandise box of as great a size as that usually employed in the display of commodities packed in boxes and displayed by the application of display fronts thereto.

The chain 4 has applied to it a claw member that comprises diverging arms 5 extending from a loop 6 in which any link of the chain 4 may be seated and also comprises fingers 7 at the outer ends of the diverging arms 5 bent at right angles to the arms and terminating in backwardly extending spurs 8.

The claw member applied to the chain 4: is readily attached to said chain by threading one of its arms through any link of the chain, according to whatever length it may be desired to acquire in the fastener; and the loop 6, by seating in the chain link, causes the claw member to be centrally presented relative to the remaining members of the fastener. It will therefore be seen that when the box front fastener is applied to a box and a box front to be held thereto, the fastener, rendered of proper length less than the distance between the box front and the rear wall of the box, may-upon expansion of the spring 1-be efliciently placed in service by application as seen in Fig. I of the drawings.

While I have referred to the element 1 of my fastener as a chain, it is obvious that any other link or loop member than what might be strictly termed a chain might be utilized in lieu of said chain. The essential characteristic of the element 4: is that of said element being of such nature as to permit adjustabilit-y of attachment of one of the claws of the fastener thereto, in order that the fastener-may be shortened or increased in length to suit it to different sized boxes.

I claim 1. A box front fastener, comprising a spring, a claw member connected to said spring at one of its ends, a second claw member, and a connection member attached to the other end of said spring to which said second claw member is adjnstably attached.

2. A box front fastener, comprising a spring, a claw member connected to said spring at one of its ends, a connection member attached to the other end of said spring, and a second claw member detachably fitted to said connection member.

3. A box front fastener, comprising a spring, a claw member at one end of said spring, a chain attached to the other end of said spring, and a second claw member attachable to any of several links of said chain. 4. A box frontfastener, comprising a spring and claw members connected to 0pposite ends of said sprin one of said claw members comprising a sliank, arms at an angle to said shank, and a finger piece connecting said arms.
