Specification of Letters Patent.
1 *atented Aug. 29, 1911.
Application filed August 12, 1910. Serial No. 576,887.
To all whom it may concern:
e it known that 1, Pinnn'ri's T. lhnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at linboden, in the county of \Vise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful l'mprovements in \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches.
An im mrtant object of this invention is to [)IOVltl) a wrench, the stationary jaw of which may be readily adjusted so that said wrench may be employed to grip different sizes oli work.
A further object of this invention is to provide a wrench particularly adapted to grip the flanges ot a pipe, whereby two pipes provided with such 'tlanges may be readily secured together.
A :t'urther object of this invention is to provide a wrench of the above character, which is formed of few and simple parts and which, cheap to manufacture and positive in its operation.
Other objects and advantages oil. this invention will be apparent hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings :torming a part of this SjmCli'iOatiOH and in which like nmnerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the body portion of the wrench, and Fig. -11: is a perspective view of the stationary jaw.
In the drawings, wherein is illustrated a preterred embodiment of .my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body portion ot the wrench, comprising a pair of spaced substantially U-shaped mel'nbers 6, which are connected at their ends, as shown at 7 and 8. The body portion is preferably stamped from sheet-metal and bent upon itself to :torn'i the substantially U-shaped members 6. An operating lever 9 is disposed between the members (3 near one end of the body portion, as shown, and this lever is pivotally connected with said members 6 by means of a bolt 10. The lever 9 has a aw 11 formed upon its inner end. and preferably east integral therewith, which jaw is provided with a groove 19 extending longitudimrlly thereof for receiving a tongue 18 of a removable hard steel plate 1:1. This plate is held upon the jaw 11, which may be termed the movable jaw, by means of pins 11"), or the like, disposed within suitable openings formed through the tongue v1;). The plate '14- is provided with teeth it; for gripping the work.
Arranged in opposition to and adapted to cooperate with the movable jaw '11, is a statirmary jaw 17. having a shank 18, which is provided. as shown, with ratehet-teetl1 it). These ratchet-teeth are :lormed upon the upper side of the shank 18 and are engaged by a pawl 20, which is pivotally mounted upon a transverse bolt 91 connecting corresponding ends oil? the members (3. a coil spring 22 provided, which has one end thereof suitably eomieeted with one of the members (3 and its opposite end suitably connected with the pawl 20, whereby said pawl is urged into engagement with said ratehetdtnith. This pawl .is also n'ovided with a handle 23, whereby the same may be moved out oit. engagement; with the ratchetteeth 19. The shank 11.8 is slidably mounted upon the section 7, and owing to the inclination of the rat rhet-t'eeth 19, it is obvious that the jaw 17 and shank 18 may be moved toward the jaw il 'l., and that the pawl. 20 will prevent their n'iovement in an opposite direction. The stationary jaw 17 is thus ad justable to or away from the movable jaw ill and may be locked in such adjusted position by the pawl 20. The st'atiomiry jaw 17 is provided with a groove it for the reception ot a tongue 25 :tormed upon a hard steel plate 96. This plate 26 is secured upon the stationary jaw 17 by means o't pins 27, which are disposed within suitable openings :lormed thrmigh the tongue 95. The inner side of the plate 26 is provided with teeth 28, as shown.
In the use of my wrench, the lever 9 is raised to the position illustrated in Fig. 1, the work is then placed between the jaws 11 and 17 and the jaw 17 adjusted so that both oi. the jaws 11. and 1,7 engage said work. It is obvious that when pressure is exerted upon the lever t) the movable jaw 11 will grip the work.
I wish it understood that the term of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a prollnrred example of the same, and that certain changes in the size, shape and arrzmgement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a wrench of the character described, a U-shaped body portion, a shank provided with teeth upon one longitudinal edge thereof and movably mounted through one end portion of said U-shaped body portion, said shank extending substantially parallel with the middle portion of said U-shaped body portion, a pawl pivotally connected with said end portion and movable into and out of engagement with said teeth, a spring to engage said pawl, a jaw carried by said shank, an operating lever pivotally con- Copies of this patent may be obtained for nected with the opposite end portion of said U-shaped body portion, and a jaw carried by said operating lever, said operating lever being adapted to be oscillated to assume a position parallel to the said shank, whereby the pressure is exerted upon the lever and shank in a longitudinal direction with relation thereto.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses' PHILETIS T. BARKER. lVitnesses R. R. PAYTON, D. M. COLLIER.
