Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed August 27, 1906. Serial No. 332,283.
To atZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON FORDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thief River Falls, in the county of Red Lake and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches;
and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches; and my object is to provide means for quickly adjusting the jaws of the wrench to receive various sized nuts and pipes.
A further object is to provide means for securely locking the movable jaw of the wrench in its adjusted position.
Other objects and advantages will be here inafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench construction, showing the same as applied to use upon a pipewrench. Fig. 2 is a similar view as applied to use upon a common nut-wrench. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen from line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view as seen from line 4 4, Fig. 1; and 5 is a sectional view as seen from line 5 5, lig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference-numerals designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the handle portion of my improved wrench, which is provided with a longitudinal slot 2 and has secured to one end thereof a stationary jaw 3. That end of the handle containing the stationary jaw 3 is provided with a socket 4, through which is adapted to extend a shank 5, the outer end of said shank being provided with a movable jaw 6, while the inner end thereof is reduced to form a stub-shaft 7, upon which is rotatably mounted a cam-lock 8, said lock having an operating-handle 9 secured to one edge thereof, the lock being held upon the stub-shaft in any preferred manner, as by a cotter-pin 10.
The upper edge of the slot 2 is left smooth while a portion of the lower edge thereof is provided with a plurality of notches or teeth 11, with which is adapted to cooperate a plurality of similarly-constructed teeth 12, carried at the lower edge of the shank 5.
The inner end of the shank 5 is held in position within the slot 2 and in alinement with the handle 1 by means of guide-plates 13, said plates being disposed at each side of the shank 5 and secured thereto in any preferred manner, as by a rivet 14, the ends of said plates being of sufiicient length to extend beyond each edge of the slot 2 and into engagement with the handle portion. The shank 5 is narrower than the slot 2, thereby permitting the inner end of the shank to be moved from edge to edge of the slot, the ob ject being to provide suflicient space in the slot to permit the disengagement of the teeth upon the shank from the notches in the edge of the slot 2, so that the movable jaw and shank may be adjusted longitudinally to fit di'lferentsized nuts or pipes.
After the movable jaw has been properly adjusted the lock 8 is disposed into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, the cam portion of the lock engaging the upper edge of the slot 2, thereby directing the inner end of the shank 5 downwardly and disposing the teeth 12 into engagement with the notches 11, and it will be seen that as long as the lock remains in this position that the movable jaw will be held rigidly in its adjusted position. When it is desired, however, to increase or diminish the space between the movable and stationary jaws, the handle 9 is directed downwardly and the cam portion of the lock disengaged from the edge of the slot, whereupon the inner end of the shank 5 can be elevated and the teeth 12 disengaged from the notches 11, when the shank and movable jaw can be freely adjusted longitudinally in the slot 2, and when the movable jaw has been properlyadjusted the handle 9 is again elevated and the cam portion of the lock again disposed into engagement with the upper edge of the slot 2, which will again direct the teeth on the shank into engagement with the notches at the edge of the slot.
The outward movement of the shank 5 through the socket 4 is limited by disposing a pin 15 laterally through the shank 5, the protruding ends thereof being adapted to engage the walls of the socket 4 to prevent further withdrawal of the shank from the socket.
While I have shown but a portion of the lower edge of the slot 2 as provided with notches 11, it will be understood that the number of notches can be increased and the pin 15 properly located,'so that the jaws of the wrench can be moved farther apart to receive a larger nut or pipe, and by this construction it will be seen that I have provided 'a cheap and simple means for quickly increasing or decreasing the space between the jaws of the wrench and one that will enable me to readily lock the movable jaw in its adjusted position.
What I claim is 1. In a wrench of the class described comprising the combination with a handle having an elongated slot therein and a socket at one end thereof, a jaw stationary with said handle; of a shank adjustablymounted in said slot and socket, a aw movable with said shank, a shaft at the inner end of said shank, a cam-lock rotatably secured to said shaft, and means to operate said lock whereby said shank will be secured in its adjusted position v in the slot.
2 In a wrench of the class described comprising the combination with a handle having an elongated slot therein and a socket at one end thereof and a jaw rigid with said handle; of a shank adapted to be disposed through said socket and into said slot, means to hold the free end of said shank in alinement with said handle, a jaw at the outer end of said shank and movable therewith, a plurality of teeth on the lower edge of said shank, a shaft at the inner end of said shank, a cam-lock rotatably secured on said shaft, means to operate said lock and a plurality of notches at the lower edge of said slot adapted to receive the teeth on said shank whereby when the cammed portion of said lock is in engagement with the upper edge of said slot, the shank and jaw carried thereby will be held in its adjusted positions 3. In a wrench of the class described com prising the combination with a handle portion having an elongated slot therein and a plurality of notches at one edge of said slot; of a shank adapted to be disposed in said slot, teeth carried by said shank, a shaft at one end of said shank, a lock on said shaft, said
