To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRVEN E. Loos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge Springs, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stools, Chairs, and the Like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact. description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to, improvements in adjustable stools, benches, chairs and the like for pianos, organs and all other purposes.

Une object of the invention is to provide a stool or chair of this character having an improved construction and arrangement of fastening mechanism whereby the seat may be quickly and easily adjusted to and secured at the desired elevation.

Another objectis to provide an adjustable stool, chair or bench which will be simple strong durable and inexpensive in construction, eflicient and reliable in operation and in which the looking or fastening mechanism for the seat is in an out of the way position but within convenient reach for operation.

Referring more particularly to the drawin s, 1 denotes the edestal of the stool, said pedestal comprising a fiat top piece 2 to which are secured supporting legs 3 said legs being suitably braced as shown. To the to piece is also secured a depending centraliy disposed post 4 havlng formed therein a centrally disposed socket 5. The upper end of the socket communicates with a centrally disposed passage 6 formed in the top of the pedestal. The socket 5 1n the post 4 is increased in size at its upper portion to form shoulders 7 and 8.

Engaged with the passage 6 in the top piece 2 and with the socket 5 in the postst is a metal socket or bushing 9. On the upper end of the bushing 9 is formed an annular flange 10 which engages the upper surface of the top 2. The lower portion of the bushing is reduced on its outer side thus forming a shoulder 11. When the bushing is engaged with the socket 5. the shoulder 11 will engage the shoulder 7 in the socket and the inner end of the bushing will ongage the shoulder 8. When thus arranged the surface of the bore in the bushing will be flush or in line with the surface of the lower portion of the socket in the post. In one side of the thicker upper portion of the socket is formed a transverse assage or slot 12 the purpose of which Wlll be hereinafter described.

Arranged in the socket 5 and lower ortion of the bushing is a coiled seat pro ecting spring 13. In the bushing and engaging the spring 13 is a seat supporting stem 14 having on its upper end a tenon 15 which is engaged with the seat 16 and thus securely fastens the seat to the stem. In the stem is formed a series of parallel, annular grooves or recesses 17 with which is adapted to be engaged a seat locking or fastening device whereby the seat is held in its adjusted positions.

The seat locking device comprises a Hat bolt 18 which is slidably engaged with a casin 19 secured to the underside of the top plece 2. The bolt 1.8 is provided with a bifurcated inner end 20 which Works through a slot 21 formed in the upper portion of the pedestal and through the slot 12 in the bushing 9 and is adapted to be engaged with the grooves or recesses 17 in the stem 14 of the seat whereby the latter is fastened in its adjusted positions. The bolt 18 also has formed therein a slot 22 in which is arranged a coiled spring 23 one end of which is engaged with a stud 24 in the inner end of the slot 22 and the outer end of which is engaged with a lug 25 in the casing 19 whereby the pressure of the spring is exerted to force the bolt inwardly and to hold the same in engagement with the recesses or grooves in the stem of the seat. On the outer end of the bolt is formed a retracting lug or finger 26 whereby the bolt may be readily retracted to permit the seat to be raised or lowered.

When it is desired to adjust the seat the bolt is retracted and the spring 13 permitted, to raise, the seat, or pressure is applied to lower the seat to the desired position whereupon the bolt is released and the spring thereof permitted to project the same into engagement with one of the grooves or recesses 17 in the stem of the seat thereby, securely holding the seat in its adjustedposition. i

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Having thus described my invention what ll claim is An adjustable stool comprising a pedestal with a post depending therefrom and having a socket therein, a detachable metal socket mounted part way in the first-mentioned socket and contacting with the upper face of the pedestal, a detachable coiled spring mounted in the socket of the post and that of the metal socket, a stem having a tenon on its upper end tachably connecte thereto, said stem having a series of annular grooves formed therein, said stem being mounted in the metal socket and having its lower end contacting with the upper end of the spring, a guide casing adjacent the upperend of the socket having a lug at its outer end, a pawl arranged within; the casing having a slot in which the lug is seated, a lug integral with the pawl at the end of the slot opposite to said first-ment oned lug, a springoperating between the two lugs, whereby the pawl is normally held in engagement with one of the annular grooves of the stem thereby locking the seat in adjusted position, and means at the outer end of the pawl for withdrawing it from engagement with the stem.
