f UNITED sTATns PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. ELsAs, or BLUE Mounn, MIssoU-Rn 'To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EnuaiiiLJ-i Risas, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Blue Mound, in' the county of 'Livingston and State of Missouri, have invei'ited a new andusefu-l .Bit-Holder', of which thc-follow-l i with a shoulder 12 and the said shoulder is This invention has relation to hit holders and consist'sgin the novel^coiislruction` hei-rbit .in propel". ,Gligagement with a socketed' 'inaft'er' describedshown and lclaimed.

to pass along the groove) in the shank off the bit 8 'andthe-beveled.end T tliereot' is adapted to-wedgc upon the caniv wall 11 of the groove branch 1() when the liit'is turned upon its axis with relation to the holder 1.`
The bit 8 is provided adjacent its' shank provided with a. lug 13 which is adapted t0 enter and lit snugly within the recess 3 at the endof the holder 1 when the bit is turned upon itsaxis with relationto the holder and the beveled end of the stop Gis-` wedged Aagz'iinst 'the cani wall 11 of' the groove branch 10. The groove branchjl in the shank of the bit .S'is enough longer-iin a direction longitudinally of 'the bit,- .than the thickness of the stop 6 in the same direction' s to permit t-lie engagement and dis'engage nient of the lug 13 and 'the recess 3. There.- fore it will be seen that when the shankof thebit 8 is inserted in the socketr 2 pro; vided in the bolder 1 and lthe parts are en-l gaged in position as hereinbe'fore indicated that 'the-twisting strain to whichthe bit 8 is subjected while it is used for boring purposes is in a great measure resisted by the lug 13 in engagement with the radially disposed wall 4t of the recess 3. -At the same time the end of the holder 1 is in close contact with the slioulder'12 and--thus tiie thrust strain `to which the bit 8 is subjected is borne by the end of the holder 1. Therefore the stop 6 is not subjected to any great extent to either strain and the frictional contact between thesaid stop and bottom of the groove branch 10 is merely enough to prevent the bit from having a tendency to turn -in the holder 1 when thebit 8'is turned in a direction opposite to that in which the bit is Iuriied when 'it is performing the boring operation. Therefore it will'be seen that undue friction between the stop 6 and the groove branch 10 is eliminated and hence these parts are not subjected to unnecessary wear and when it is desired to disconnect the bit- 8 from the holder 1 it is necessary only to pull the said bit in aA direction away from the end of the holder when the lug 13 will be moved away from the recess aiidl then the said bit is free to rotate in the holder. l until the stop G is brought into alinement with the lower or inner end of the A groove 9 when the said stopmay be moved along the saidgroove and the bit 8 is sep- -arated from the holder 1. Therefore it will be seen that in order to effect the separation 2 y A l1,001,376
A of the' parts it is not necessary to use force orto apply a Wrench or other, tool to the parts. Furthermore when the. parts are connected together in thema-.nner as indicated they are securely-retained in their 'proper relation by reason of the twist strain to which the bit is subjected during the bor-V i ing operationandconsequently the necessity of securing screws or nuts is overcome.
Havlng described the invention what I claim as' new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of a socketed holder liaving at one end and at the side of the socket a recess with one wall radially disposed with relation' to tlieaXis of theholder and an- :othenwall 'spirally disposed with relation to the axis of the holder, a fixed stop carried by the holder Aand projecting -fi'oin the side l20 thereof into the' socket and having a beveled gend, a, bit having its shank provided with a peripheral. groove longitudinally disposed andterminating at its inner end in a laterally disposed branch with its bottom wall 25 forming a cam, the socket of said holder adapted to snugly receive the shank of' the.'
