WHEEL PUIJLER Filed May 2. 1929 Patented Nov; 18,1930` UNITED STATES GEORGE w. GREBEiTsTEnv. or Nnwro'nvrrin.'MASSACHUSETTS WHEEL Appiition med r`May 2,
`Relative todraft apparatus and particularly to wheel pulling devices, Idisclose my presentinvention as follows. As illustrated in wheelpulling devices the problem has been to provide a simple device of practical efficiency and generally' of some Vrange of utilty. Y
Y Such devices are of well known types which-have come into popular acceptance and are therefore most practically useful to the public which most easily adapts itself to ini-' proved devices of familiar type.
I therefore show and describe herein al i puller in accordance with my invention based 16 onV one of my prior devices, lbut involving improvements capable of other embodiment. In describing suchan improved wheel puller I have provided drawings inwhich- Fig. 1 is a partly sectioned elevation of 20 such a device, andl Y l Fig@ is a bottom view of theV same partly broken away;
Such a wheel puller as is thus indicated` comprises a frame or carrierpiece l having a central bearing 2 aperturedV and threaded as at 3. f Y Y This constitutes the bearing for the. take up screw 4 which hasV avvrenchV head41 by which it can vbe turned into thrustrelationship to the'end of a shaft. On each side of this bearing are lateral guide slots 5 across the top of whichv are half'cylindrical trun;`
nionbearings 7.' Y i Y In these rest the trunnion heads 8 from which depend arms 9 which develop into bases -10 adapted Vto provide for clamping'engage Vment with a Vvvheelhub.v
To enable clamping engagement of the arms 9 with wheel hubs of different sizes I 40V provide fiangefengaging ledges 1O1andl02' on the inner faces of said arms9. Such engagement is made bya slip ring 11 which can be driven down on the tapered surface 10a of the portion 10.` The engagement is frictional.Y
The trunnions 8 are heldin place by pins l2 across the slots 5 which guide the squared portions 491 of the arms 9. vThe screw 4 is axially bored as at 14 for part ofits length?V and in this bore is a'drive pinV 151V 'I his drive external conicity l0iL providesa' free'sliding Punten i Y was@ serial In.V aazs. Y Y y pin "1.5 is expsed" "af- .t-hj f1owefhd1fi1e sc rewi"which is in practice brought iup]l Vagainst the end ofthe axle shaft. 1` They screw` ,4, `slotted as VatfltV to` receive ajtape'red key 17 'which has a dri'vingengagei 55 l ment withl the upper end-"of the pin 15.f ByA n Y surface forl the ring 11 whenengaged withra hub flange.. Moreover Vwhile effectiveas come ysections y(parallel'toh whenthefjawsrl() Y are lopen vthey"assume when closed positions y 'or exterior surface which arejcylindric. in character.- Thering ll therefore wedges the jaws as itis ypushed ,down but 'when seated against theange 10b hasno'returnt'endency.
The pinl provides'for'the loosening orf startingimpact without.dangerjtothescrew l y threads vand the device canbe putinfplace and 180 Y dispatch.- j Y Y The loose mounting of the jaws l0' as by l the trunnion 8 permits a slightmoveinent of ,thevjaws relative to thefscrew 4 so as to permit a self-centering of the'puller on the axle. i .My'conc'epts are capable ofvarious em# bodiments 'of variations.l Invention is claimed within liberallimits ofinterpreta i operatedby al'singley mechanic witheas'e and tiofn ofy claims such asI now presenti y f. i
r r4What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis: Y Y f 1. kAwheel puller or the likeV comprising a ,fr'ame having a central threaded bearing and y e5 afpair of jaw supportsoneach `side thereof,
a pairlof jaws supported in'saidlbearings, aj l closing ringslidably retained vabout said aws,
a thrust screw threaded in'said bearing; a A, drive pinaxially of said screw and a driving key disposed through said screw and having a driving Contact with said pin;
. 2; A wheel puller or the like comprising a frame having a central threaded bearing and a pair of jaw supports on each side thereof said supports having trunnion hearings on their upper faces, a pair yof j aws'each having a trunnion atjitsfupper endl and-supported in said hearing'sasaid jaws having tapered outer faces and flange engaging inner faces;- a closing ring slidably retained about saidV jaws, a thrust screw threaded in said bearing, a
drive pinaxially of said screw and afdriv'ing I key disposed through said screw and having a driving contact with s'aidpin. Y` y 3. A device for pulling-a wheel or the like Afronuanaxle comprising aframe, means for detachably connectingfsaid frame with the wheel 0r the -like to he pulled, a screw threaded through said frame fonengagement at its inner end with the end of the axle, said' vscrew Y having a longitudinally extending bore opening through the axle engaging end thereof andalso-havingaltransverse slot intersecting said bore, apin within said bore extending from saidfslot to the axle engaging Vend of the screw,V and a wedge in sertable through A said slot againstthe adjacent en d of said pin andadapted to be driven to Vforce the screwv and the frame lngtldnally wthrspect to the pin..` l
"4. Afdeviee for pulling a wheel or the likewfroni, an axle comprisingfa frame, ineans i011 detahubly connecting Said frame with fthewheelj or the 'like to be pulled, a ineniber carried said frame andinovahle Vwith-re- 'spect thereto against the end Of, the axle to irnpose a pulling stress onthe wheel,` a pin Carried by said Ineinher and movablewith 'respect thereto against the" endof theaxle,
Eand ineans reacting from said pin through Said member t0 more Said frame in a dire@- tioln Vto effect pulling of the #wheel from the testimony whereof I aix my signature. GEQRQE W. ,GREBENsTElN
