CHUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jul is, 1916.
Application filed March 9, 1916. Serial No. 83,069.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON K. AN REWS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burnham, county of Mifilin, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and eifective chuck which can be firmly secured to an article to be applied to a lathe or other tool.
The invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with articles having a threaded opening at one end.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1, is a longitudinal sectional View of my improved expanding chuck, showing its application, by dotted lines, to the end of a shell; Fig. 2, is a view of one end of the chuck; Fig. 3, is a view of the opposite end of the chuck; Fig. 1, is a detached perspec tive view of the mandrel; Fig. 5, is a detached perspective view of the plug; and Fig. 6, is.a detached perspective view of the wedge key.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of the chuck made as shown inFig. 1 and having an opening extending entirely therethrough and shaped at the forward end 2 to engage the face plate or other coupling on the spindle of the lathe head. The opposite end of this body portion is beveled, as at 3, in the present instance, to fit the beveled end of the article X to be secured to the lathe head. In the present instance, this article has an opening 00 at one end and the walls of this opening are threaded to receive the ordinary plug. I utilize the threaded portion of the shell to attach the mandrel 4 t0 the shell. This mandrel is arranged to slide in the opening in the body 1 and has a threaded portion 5 at the rear end and is reduced in diameter at P directly in front of the threaded portion. The threaded end of the mandrel is adapted to the threaded opening a: in the shell and is split at 6 so that it can be expanded to force its threaded portion into locked relation with the threads of the shell.
The mandrel is hollow and the interior at the threaded end is conical to receive the conical head 7 of the plug 8 which extends entirely through the mandrel in the present instance. Means are provided for moving the plug longitudinally in respect to the mandrel so as to cause the tapered end of the plug to expand the threaded portion of the mandrel and lock it to the work, as mentioned above. In the present instance, a wedge key 9 is used for this purpose and this key extends through a transverse slot 10 in the body portion, a slot 11 in the mandrel and a slot 12 in the plug, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. When the key is driven into position it bears against the rear of the slots in the body portion and the mandrel and against the forward end of the slot in the plug and, consequently, the plug is drawn forward in the mandrel, the rear of the mandrel being expanded a firm connection is made between the mandrel and the article, at the same time the key retains the parts in alinement so that they will turn in unison. A pin 9 may be driven in an opening in the key to prevent its accidental displacement.
In securing the chuck to the article, which, in the present instance, is the body of a shell, the chuck is assembled, as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the exception that the wedge is not driven in to its full extent. The mandrel is screwed into the screw threaded opening in the end of the shell until the beveled end of the body portion comes in contact with the beveled end of the shell, then the key is driven, causing the plug to move forward independently of the mandrel and the body portion andthis action expands the threaded end of the mandrel so that it is firmly clamped within the threaded opening, thus rigidly holding the chuck to the shell. The chuck can then be applied to the latch head.
When it is desired to detach the chuck from the shell, all that is necessary is to drive the key so as to loosen the parts, after which the mandrel can be unscrewed from the shell and the chuck can be applied to another shell.
I claim 1. The combination in a chuck, of a body portion; a threaded mandrel mounted in the body portion, the threaded end of the mandrel being split and extending beyond the body portion; a tapered plug mounted in the mandrel; and means for drawing the plug into the mandrel.
2. The combination in a chuck, of a body portion having a longitudinal opening therein; a mandrel mounted in the opening and having a screw thread at the rear end thereof and slotted, the interior of the mandrel having an opening therethrough, the opening at the rear being tapered; a plug mounted in the mandrel having a tapered head, the threaded end of the mandrel extending beyond theend of thebody portion; and means for drawing the plug into the mandrel.
3. The combination of a body portion; a mandrel mounted in the body portion and having a screw threaded end projecting-beyond the rear end of the body portion, said rear end of the mandrel beigng-slotted; a plug mounted "in the mandrel and having ,a tapered head; transverse slots in the plug, mandrel and body portion; and a wedge gkey adapted to the slots and arranged to draw the plug into the mandrel and to extend the threaded end thereof.
4. The combination in a chuck, of a body portion having a longitudinal opening therein, the said body portion having a beveled rear end arranged to :fit against the end-of the article to be secured ;to the chuck; a mandrel located Within the body portion and having a threaded rear end, said rear end having longltudmal slots thereln to allow it to expand, the mandrel having a of the :mandrel; atransverse slot in the plug and in the mandrel and body portion; and a key adapted to the slots and arranged to draw the wedge ,into the anandrel.
5. The combination of a body portion; a mandrel mounted in the body portion and having its rear end extending beyond the body portion and threaded, the mandrel being less in diameter directly in front of the head; longitudinal slots in the mandrel extending through the threaded and-reduced portion; ,a plug mounted in the mandrel; and means for drawing the plug to expand the mandrel.
