HAND-OPERATED MASSAGE DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1911.'
Application led September 23, 1908, Serial No. 454,362. Renewed November 14, 1910. Serial No. 592,325.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. SIEBERT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Operated Massage Devices', of which the following is a specificati-on.
' My invention relates to the improvement of hand operated'massage devices of that class which are particularly adapted for use in massaging the face.
The objects of my invention are to provide a simple and convenient construction of hand operated massaging devices of such form andarrangement as to facilitate the proper application of the massaging cup to the face; to permit of the employment of detachable cups of different forms and to provide improved means for the engage-- ment of the body of the device by the n gers. manner illustrated in the accompanymg drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of `my device, and, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. l l
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I` employ a cylindrical body 1 which has one of its ends provided. plug 2 and which at its remaining end 1s l provided with a reduced neck-like extension 3 which inclines at an angle from the direction of the length of the cylinder 1. The extension 3 is formed withl a central passage 4 which communicates with the interior of and the outer endv of said extension is formed with an enlar ement 3a,
'the outer recessed end of which 1s adapted to receive appackin or socket ring` 5, which is preferably of ru ber.
In constructing the body of the same in its rear ha f with 'oppositely' located curvedI finger hold pro- Within the cylin er, I provide jections la.
fits and is adapted to slide a piston 6 which therein. This piston has connected therewith a horizontal stem 7 which passes movably through lan opening 1n theclosure plug 2 and the outer end of which is formed withan enlarged or button-like head 7b. Between the piston 6 and the outer end of the cylinder is interposed a coiled spring 8, the
These objects I accomplish rin theA with a detachable closurethe cylinder 1, I rovidev latter serving to normally retain the piston in the rear end portion of the cylinder.
9 represents a massaging cup which comprises a shank portion 9a which may be slightly tapering, as shown, and which is adapted to be detachably inserted within the rubber' packing ring and which also comprises a fiaring cup-like outer end portion 9b. This cup which is preferably formed of glass, has a comparatively small passage 9C running through its shank portion. It will be understood, however, that the form of the outer cup termination may be varied as desired and that various sizes of cups may be employed.
1 In utilizing my device, the same may be preferably heldin the hand of the operator by causing the outer surface of the head of the button termination of the piston stem or rod 7 to abut against the palm of the hand,
complished the mouth of the cup 9 is Y brought into engagement with the face of the person to be massaged and the pressure on the finger holds released, permitting the spr1ng8 to act in moving the piston rearward and at the same time creating a vacuum or partial vacuum, which results in the suction of the flesh of the face into the cup. By moving the cylinder and thus drawing the cup across or in any desired direction on the face, it is obvious that the l engagement of the cup and flesh of the person massaged will continue until the cup is forcibly pulled from the face or the piston is again forced inward. By this operation,
' it will be understood that a cupping or massagin effect may be readily and easily 1mparte to the face and in order to facilitate the proper manipulation of my device, I have formed the cup holding neck at an angle with the cylinder and piston stem, thus ermitting the cup being held in a substantlally horizontal position from the face, while the cylinder and piston stem are en gaged by the hand as described and held at a natural or convenient inclination for operation by the hand.
By employing detachable cups of glass,
it is obvious that said cups may be readily land easily cleansed or sterilized after using.
What I claim, is: In a hand operated massaging device, the combination with a cylinder having oppositely located finger hold projections on its periphery, a piston in said cylinder, a' spring interposed between the piston and the outer end of the cylinder, and a piston stem passing through the inner end of thev cylinder, of a cylinder neck'extension 3 hav-v ing a central passage therethrough land a recessed terminal enlargement, said neck eX- tension 'extending at anangle with the cylinder, a packin ring carried in the end recess of saidnec and a massagingv cup having a central passage therethrough and having its shank portion adapted to be detachably engaged With said packing ring.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature n presence of tWo Witnesses.
