HIOCIKZDOWN BOX.
Specieation of Letters Patent. Patented 'Augg 22, 1911.
Application mea p1-n 11, 1911. serial No. 620,358.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Emxnnn G. KoHoUT,
a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, inthe county of New York and State of New York', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Boxes', ofwhich the following is a specification, such as will enable those' skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
This invention relates to what are known as`foldable or knockdown boxes, andthe object thereof is to'provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construc'- tion and comparatively inexpensive and which may be used for manyl purposes; a further object being to provide a box of the class specified which may be compactly ping from one point to another.
The invention describedl and claimed herein is animprovement onthat described and claimed in a prior application for Letters Patent of the U. S. led by me January 23rd, 1911, Serial No. 604,071, and said invention is fully disclosed Ain the following specification, of which the accompanying which the separate parts of my 'improvement are designated by suitable ,reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view.of\a knock down, box made according to my invention and showing'the cover thereof open. Fig. 2, a plan-.view showing the parts of the box folded together ;-Fig. 3, a diagrammatic section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;-and, Fig. 4, al similar sectionl on the- line 4,4 of Fig. 2. v
My improved knockdown box a as shown in the drawing is rectangular in form and square or approximately square in plan, or horizontal .sect-ion. The said box may be oblong in form in plan or horizontal section, -if desired.
The box'a comprises a bottom b,"'two opside members c hinged to the'bottom to the bottom b and a cover e hinged, in the construction shown,
to -one of the sidemembers c. All the parts of the box, as above described, arecom-v posed of sheet metal, in the form of construction shown, and all the side or side and end portionsare divided horizontally and centrally in the topl and bottom portions which.l
are hinged together .at f, and-said side or side and e'nd portions are hinged to the bottom b, as shown at f2.
The hinges at f opposite side'members, as c, will fold out-- wardly centrallythereof, as indicated at 02, and the other two op osite side or end members, asd, will fold inwardly, as indicated at d2, and the hinges atf2 are so formed that two of the lside members, as e, will fold outwardly, while the other two side or end members, as d, will fold inwardly.
The hinges at f consist of continuous rods 3, .the lengths of which are equal to the horizontaldimensions of the side or side and end, members, and these rods are placed in keepers stamped in the material of said side or side and end members when the hinges or the separate parts of the hinges f are formed, and one part of the hinges f is formed in connection with one part of the-'side'.-or side and end members and the other part of said hinges is formed in connection with the other partof said side or side and end members, in the operationv ofstampingfsaid side or side and end members out of sheet. metal. The hinges f2 by which the side or side and end members are connected with the bottom b are formed in a manner similar' to the hinges at f, said hinges at f2 consisting are formed` so that two esy of rods placed in keepers formed when th"e out, and said separate parts of said hiilges being also formed in connection with the bottom b and in' connection with the side or side and end members.
The cover e is hinged to one members, as shown` at e2, and is adapted to fold over on and inclose the box when the separate parts of said box are in the position shown in Fig. 1.
@Placed in the top ofthe box, or in the top of the side or side and end members, is 'a frame g composed of a stiff wire or rod bent into the exact form and dimensions of the of the side top of the box or the body thereof, and this 4frame is held in place by keepers g2 .formed yby folding the top edges of the side or side and end portions of the box.
Any suitable means may be provided forl 4 inclusive, w1ll be readily understood from the foregoing description, when V"taken in connection with the accompanying'drawing and the following statement thereof. In4 this operation the cover e is first raised, as
y shown in F ig.2. The side members c are 5 bent outwardly centrally thereof, and at thel same time ,the side or end; members d are bent inwardly centrally thereof and this movementis continued' until they said side or side and end members are -oornpactly'folded together onthel bottomo'ffthesbomas shown 'l in Figs. '2 'to t--incliisive,,andthe' cover-e A is then fo1dedthe1'-k`enk isjalfso'fshown in said figures. 1 Int-his operation the to .edges of the side'fmembersic anc -side or en 'membersdiemain in connection with "the frame g, vas'will be. readily understood', and the top corners o'f the box-move downwardly andvertically, and Whenever it is desired to raise the'parts ofthe box into position forr vi'is'e,.
asgshown in Fig-'1, the cover'e-.is first raised l. an the inner vor top edgev portions of thel 3 lside members@ and side or end members d are grasped or-raised into the position shownl inlsaidf figure, after which the -cover'e is loweredand secured.4 Y v n' .fVithy this-construction ity is not absollmite'ly necessary to providel other means for seciir-v members will remain' in the proper position, as shown in Eig; 1. My invention is not` limited, however, to 'the' particular constructionof the corner" parts l'of the box or 'the 40 connection thereof, and changes 1n and modifications of these features" of construction may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, vwithout departing from' the spirit-'ofmy invention vor sacrificing its advantages. i
Tlavingffrully described my invention,
what I claim as new,and desire to securefby Letters Patent, 1s :--A
l'. A -knockdown box comprising a bottom, side or side and end members hinged to the 5,0
bottom, and a cover hinged to onefofy saidI side or sidexand end-members, said side or side vand end members being divided cen-il;l til-ally and horizontally'into two similarparts hinged together, this connection'being such 55 lthat two opposite'sdefor side and end ,mem-r .bers will fold outwardly, :an-d the other two oppositeside 'or side'fand endmembers will 'fold inwardly, and the hinged connection ofthe sideor 'side and end members with the y6o bottom beingcorrespondingly formed, and
said side-,or side and end members being pro-'- .vided at the top and at thev corners thereof 12. A knockdwn box comprising ai'ibbtntom,.-65 i* side or 'side fand end members hinged to the bottom, `and a cover hinged to oneofsaid side or' side-and end -members,- saidY side' or 'side and end membersfbeing divided oen-fy .I lt'rally and horizontally` intovftwo similar-70 parts hinged together,'thisvconnection being suchV that two opposite side or side fandfend members will-fold outwardly, and the-.other4` two oppositey sideorsideandend membersl.- willv fold inwardly, andthe hinged connec- 7,5 tion of the side or `side andv end members' with 'the bottom being correspondingly formed, and said side or side and endmembers being-A j provided at the top and at the cornersthere-- f *of with a folding eonnection, consis ting of ,80, keepers 'at'the .top of saidfside or s1de and end members and a wire orrod frame placedin said keepers. Y c
In testimony that I cla'im the foregoing as my invention Ip'h'ave signed-myfnam in 85 presence of the lsubscribing witnessesqt is' 10th day of April 1911.- Q v, Y v I EMANUEL. -KOiIOUTy 'vitnesse's: 1, s
