Description
Dec. 25, 1923. ,478,884} J. A. BECKER WASTE RECEPTACLE Filed July 8. 1922 2 SheetsfSheet l M/venten Dec. 25, 1928. 1,478,884 J. A. BECKER WASTE RECEPTACLE Filed July 8. 1922 2 Sheets-*Sheet 2 2f fw gg f/ To all whom it concern.' Be it known that JonN A. Brom, a citizen of the United States,residing at Nam in the county of Canyon and State of Ida o, I has invented certain new and useful Improvemeiits in Waste Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to waste receptacles .l and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein a removable bag or the like is supported within the rece tacle proper, a` portion of said receptac e being removable to permit the withdrawal of such bag when desired.
Another object of the invention is to prolvide a novel and improved device of this general character especially designed and 20 adapted for public use and wherein provision is made for the dis lay of advertisements.
Furthermore, it 1s an Object of the invention to provide a novel a'nd improved device of this general character wherein. removable side plates or panels are employed and which are adapted to carry advertisements or the like. t.
An additional object of the invention is 4to provide a novel and im roved device of this` general'cha-racter whlch is especially adapted for outside use and which is constructed in a manner to maintain the saine substantially proof against insects, dust and ram.
rlhe'invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved waste receptacle whereb certain important advantages are attaine andthe device. rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.A v
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view inperspective illustrati'ng a waste receptacle constructed in accordance with anl embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in toplan of the device 55' as herein disclosed -withI t e top removed;
mue-un ma mi s, ma. sum l. In.
Figure 3 is a fragments sectional view taken substantially on the llne 3-3 of Fig- Mural;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in bottom plan of the device as herein disclosed and illustrating one of the supporting legs;
Figure 5 is aV fragmentary sectional view taken through thedevice as illustrated in Fi ure 1, one of the doors bei igure 6 is a vertical sectiona view taken through the top removed with the doors in closed position;
open; and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 7-7.of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view in pers ective of an upper corner of the body of t e receptacle. As disclosed in the accompanying draws, my improved receptac e comprises a low body B herein disclosed as substantially rectangular in form and which comprises the side walls 1 and the bottom wall 2, the'side walls 1 being provided at their lower margins withthe outstanding flanges 3 which interlock with the reverted flange 4 arranged at the mar inal portions of the bottom wall 2. The adjacent vertical margins of the side Walls 1 are soldered, welded or otherwise connected andare disposed outwardly to provide corner flanges 5 arranged at substantially an angle ofv forty-live degrees to the ad'acent side walls 1. yThe upper margins o the side walls 1 are defined by the inwardly directed anges 6.
Associated with each of the side walls 1 is a anel 7 which is adapted to have produce thereon advertisement or other matter for display, said panel vbeing of substantially thesame dimensions as the associated wall 1-. The side or vertical margins of the panel 7 is provided with an youtstanding iange 8 which, when the panel 7 is in applied position, are immediately adjacent to the corner ian es 5.
(lo-acting with each of the corners of the bod B is an elongated tubular split sleeve or arre'l 9 preferably cylindrical in cross section and which when applied housesa corner ilange 5 and en ages the side or vertical flanges 8 of the adjacent removable panel 7 whereby said panels are eii'ectively maintained in applied position. Each of the sleeves or barrels 9 is applied or removed by sliding action with the anges extendlos' lll)
in y within the sleeve' ord barrel through the sp it thereof. When the barrels or sleeves i '9 are applied they` also afford ornamentation of the complete receptacle and' preferably. extend from the bottom of the body B to the top or open face thereof.
Associated with the corners of the body B and attached to the bottom wall or plate 2 thereof are the supporting legs L. Each of these legs comprises a s lit sleeve or barrel having its longitudina edgesdefined by the outstanding wings 10, the upper ends of which wings being defined b the outstanding flanges 11 which are sol ered or Welded or otherwise attached to the bottom walt or plate 2 of the body B. A
Suitably secured to a central'portion of the bottom wallv or late 2 of the bodyB and depending there rom is a hook member to which a weight may be attached and which will be concealed from view, ^said weight being heavy enough to hold said plate against displacement when subjected to a strong wind or.l other pressure.
The upper portion of the body' B at the corners thereof is provided with upstanding pointed members 12 to provide means whereby a bag or sack S may be effectivel `held or arranged within the body B to-directly receive the waste or' other Amaterial deposited within the receptacle. This bag or sack S has associated with its mouth a draw string 14 so that the mouth of said bag or sack ma Vbe closed, which closing of the mouth of t e bag or sack S may be accomplished by pullingupon thedraw string 14, to take the 'bag or sack S out `of the .bedy B. This provides an o eration whereby the bag or sack vS wit the material therein, when withdrawn from the rev ceptacle, may be deposited in a collection wagon, it being un erst'ood that the filled bag or sack is re laced by an empty one.`
The opposedside walls 1, or more particularly the flanges 6 thereof at their longitudinal centers, are provided with upstand- -ing spring arms 15 which are provided adjacent their outer ends With outwardly facing lugs or fingers 16.
' These lugs or fingers 16 are received within the openings 17 in the side wallsof the top member T whereby said top member is'etlectively held in applied position by the body B. This holding means for the top 'T, however, permits the top to be readily removed when it is desired to withdraw the bagor sack S and to replace the same. The
I side walls of the top T are provided at their lower marginal portions with the outstanding langes 18 which when the top T `is applied rest upon the ange; 6 of the body B.
The central portion 19 of the ton T isilat .-while they portions 20 at opposite sides thereof are disposed on downward inclines. The
- incassiF inclined portions 20 are rovided with Vopenings 21, each` of which4 eing partially continued as at 21,l in the ortion ofthe side wall immediately below t e inclined portion. The ' openings 21 and 21 provide means Y whereby waste. or other 'material may be readily deposited withinv the receptacle andl A said- openings 21 and 21 are normally closed by a swinginvdoor v22 hingedly connected as at 23 to 'an'inclined portion 20 at a point ,above or in close proximity yto the associated .l
opening 21. The lower marginalportion of the door 22 isprovided with an angular extension 24 which serves to close theportion 20 of the openings 21. i i
The side marginal portions of each of. they sov openings 21 is provided with reverted flanges 25, said flanges facing inwardlyand oyerlying ythe opening 21. The flanges 25 provide grooves to receive the mar mal flanges 26 carried by-a plate 27 overlying the door 22 and Welded or otherwise secured thereto. i
The plate 27, when the dooris in closed position, is received within the opening 21 and the low'er mai' inal ortion of the plate 27 extends beyon the ower 'marginal portion of the door 22 pro rito provide a shed 27! which, when the dbbr 2%is closed extends belyond the adjacent side of the topand w ereby` the entrance of water within the.
portion secured to the.
of the doors 22 also prevent ingress upper wall of the top T and has its opposite end portions constantly/in contact with the inner face of the doors 22 as is clearly illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. The upper wall of the top T has disposed thereacross an upstanding flange 29 which, in addition to being ornamental, serves to further reinforce the structure of the top T. This flange -29 is also adapted to apply thereto reading or other matter such as a notice to the public tokeep the city clean.
From the foregoing description it isA thought to be obvious that a waste receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with lll) which it may be assembled and operated,
band it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the princi les and spirit thereof and 'for this reason do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of o l.
