Be it known that I, CONSTANT T. CUN- DALL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVeb-Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification,"
In web feeding mechanism in which upper and lower web sections are being fed there is I a tendency of one of the web sections to lag or fall behind the other.
The object of this invention is to provide a very simple and effective manually con-' trolled means for overcoming this tendency of the websections to feed unevenly, and insuring the proper feed of these web sections without interfering with the operation of the machine. This is'accomplished by rendering any one or more of the web feed rolls efi'ectlve or ineffective by connecting the driving mechanism to or disconnecting it from the roll or rolls at pleasure.
A practicalembodiment of this invention is represented in the accompanying drawin s in which igure 1 is a section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, through so much of a web folding machine as will give a clear understanding of the invention, Fig. 2 is a sectiontaken in the plane of the line BB of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the course which two adjacent webs follow from one of the turners to the final pair of feed rolls, Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of one of the registering feed rolls, its shaft being shown in section, Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same, an intermediate portion of the roll being broken away, Fig. 6 is a section taken in the plane of the line OC of Fig. '5, looking in the direction of the arrows,-Fig. 7 is a section taken in the plane of the line D--D of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 8 is a plan view of one end of the registering feed roll taken at right angles toFig. 5, Fig. 9 is a longitudinal central section through the registering feed roll, the clutch being shown in full lines in its position for connecting the roll 'to its shaft and in dotted lines in the posi- Figs. 10, 11 and 12 are detail views of the brake-band operating dog, and Figs. 13 and 14 are detail face and edge views of the brake-band.
Upper and lower webs, 1 and 2 pass around adjusting rolls 3 and 4 respectively and over the feed roll 5. From thence the associated upper. and lower webs pass over' the slitting roll 6 where they are separated into a plurality of sections by the slitters 7. In the present instance there are shown three of these slitters 7 for dividing the two associated webs into four sections. Four singleturners 8 are shown located adjacent to the slitting roll 6. As the associated upper and lower web sections leave the points of. the turners 8, they pass between a pair of feed rolls 9, 10 and after passing around anumber of intermediate feed rolls 11, all of the web sect-ions are finallyv passed between a pair of feed rolls 12; 13, from whence the associated web sections are fed to the cutting and folding mechanism, not shown herein. In the presentinstancethe first pair of upper and lower Web sections, counting from the left in Fig. 2, passes around three intermediate feed rolls, .the second pair around three intermediate feed rolls, the third pair around five intermediate feed rollsand the fourth pair around four intermediate feed rolls. It is to be understood however, that any number of these intermediate feed rolls may be provided as may be desired.
Any one or more intermediate or registering feed rolls 11 for each air of upper and lower websections may be provided with means for connecting the driving mechanism to or disconnecting it from said roll or rolls at pleasure. The device shown herein for accomplishing this result is constructed, arran ed and operated as follows. The interme iate or registering feed roll shaft is denoted by 14,,which shaft is connected to the driving mechanism. The roll 11 is loosely mounted on the shaft 14 between the end block 15 and the fixed member 16 of the clutch, the said roll being keyed to a sleeve 17 having a cylindrical portion 18 located within the hollow bore of the clutch member 16. This clutch member 16 is keyed to the shaft 14.
A split brake-band 19 is interposed between. the inner wall of the fixed clutch member 16 and the periphery of the portion 18 of the sleeve 17. This split brake-band is provided with outwardly turned ends 20, 21;." The end 20 is fitted to be engaged by the end of 'a'friction adjusting set screw 22 carried by the clutch member 16. A look nut 23 is provided for locking the screw in its different adjustments. The other end 21 of the brake-band 19 is provided with an inclined cam face 24 which is fitted to be engaged by an inclined cam face 25 of a dog 26 pivoted at 27 in the fixed clutch member 16. The tail piece 28 of this dog 26 is arranged to be engaged by the rounded end 29 of the sliding member 30 of the clutch, which member is loosely mounted on the shaft 14. The handle 31 is loosely. mounted on the sliding member 30 of the clutch for permitting the manual operation of said member without interfering with the operation of the machine. As the sliding member is forced inwardly, it will cause the dog 26 to engage the brake-band 19 and move the brake-band into position to clamp the registering roll 11 to the shaft 14;. As the sliding member of the clutch is moved outwardly away from its engagement with the dog 26, the brake-band may bepermitted to return to its normally-released position, thu's dis connecting the roll 11 from the shaft '14.
- It is to be understood that the shafts of the several intermediate or registering feed rolls are positively driven through suitable trains of gears such, for instance, as those shown in the accompanying drawings, a specific description ofwhich is not thought necessary herein. a
In operation, when at any time it is found that one of the web sections is lagging behind its adjacent web section, the registering roll which is engaged with said firstnamed web section, may be disconnected from its drive shaft, thus permitting the roll to run idly and not perform its function of a feed several registering rolls,-it will be seen that a very simple means is provided for insuring the accurate feeding of both of the web sections with respect to each other.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the character described, a turner around which two superposed webs are passed, upper and lower pairs of feed rolls engaging the webs, additional feed rolls engaging the exposed faces of the webs intermediate the saidup er and lower pairs of feed rolls and means or rendering an intermediate feed roll for each web effective or ineffective at pleasure for accomplishing the even feed of-the two webswith respect to each other.
2. In a machine of the character described, a turner around which two superposed Webs are passed, upper andlower pairs of feed rolls engaging the webs, additional feed .even feed 0 and lower pairs of feed rolls engaging the roll. By connecting and disconnecting the" rolls engaging the exposed faces of the webs intermediate the said upper and lower pairs of feed rolls, driving mechanism and means for connecting the driving mechanism to and discomiecting'it from an intermediate feed roll for each web at pleasure for accomplishing the even feed of the two webs with respect to each other.
3. In a machine of the character described,
a plurality of turners around which pairs of superposed web sections are passed, upperv and lower pairs of feed rolls engaging the web sections, additional feed rolls engaging the exposed faces of the web sections intermediate the said upper and lower pairs of feed rolls and means for rendering one or more of the said intermediate feed rolls for each pair of web sections effective or ineffective at leasure for accomplishing an f the web sections with respect to each other. 4. In a machine of the character described,
a plurality of turners around which pairs of superposed web sections are passed, upper web sections, additional feed rolls engaging the exposed faces of the web sections intermediate the said upper and lower pairs of feed rolls and means for rendering an inter-' mediate feed roll for each web section .effective or ineffective at pleasure for accomplishing the even feed of the web sections with respect to each other.
5. In amachine of the character described, a plurality of turners around which pairs of superposed web sections are passed, upper and lowerpairs of feed rolls engaging the web sections, additional feed rolls en aging the exposed faces of the web sections intermediate the upper and lower pairs of feed rolls, driving mechanism and means for connecting the driving mechanism to and disconnecting it from one or more of the intermediate feed rolls of each pair of web sec-' tions at pleasure for accomplishing theeven feed of the web sections-with respect to each other.
6. In a machine of the character described, aplurality of turners around which pairs of superposed web sections are passed, upper and lower pairs of feed rolls engaging the web sections, additional feed rolls en agingthe exposed faces of the web sections intermediate the said upper and lower pairs of feed rolls, driving mechanism and means for connecting the driving mechanism to and disconnecting it from an intermediate feed roll for each web section at pleasure for accomplishing the even feed of the web sections with respect to each other.
7 In a machine of the character described, a shaft, a web feed roll loosely mounted thereon and a clutch comprising a fixed member, a brake-band interposed between the fixed clutch member and the roll, a dog 130 carried by the fixed clutch m sliding clutch the dog for 0a the roll to the fixed clutch 5 thereby the shaft.
