Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.

To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Web-Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in web folding machines in which right and left hand turners are employed, means being provided for effectually overcoming the tendency of the lower web, viz: the web which engages the turner, to lag or fall behind when the webs are passing around the turner, the said parts being so arranged that the above object is accomplished successfully with both the right and left hand turners, the point of one of the turners being spaced a suflicient distance from the point of the other turner to permit the upper and lower webs to be positively fed from both of the turners.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail view showing so much of a web folding machine having right and left hand turners as will give a clear idea of'my invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the same takenat right angles to Fig.1 the feeding pulleys in front of the slitters being removed; Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section .taken in the plane of the line AA of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 5 is a detail section showing one of the spring-pressed bearings.
Upper and lower webs 1 and 2 pass around adjusting rolls 3 and 4 respectively and between pulleys 5 and the feeding roll 6. From thence, the upper and lower webs pass over the slitting roll 7 where they are separated into a plurality of sections by the slitters 8. In the present instance I have shown two of these slitters 8, for dividing the upper and lower webs into three sections.
Right and left hand turners 9 and 10 form a double turner located adjacent to the slitting roll 7. In the present instance another single turner 11 is provided which corresponds to the left hand turner 10. One of the pair of double turners 9 and 10 is shorter than the other, in the present instance the right hand turner 9, so that the devices which are arranged to engage and drive both the upper and lower webs as they leave the turners may be arranged in position at the points of the turners without interfering with each other. At the point of each of the long left hand single turners 10 and 11, there is located a device for preventing the lower web from lagging or falling behind as follows. A shaft 12 is mounted to rotate in suitable bearings in the framing 13 of the machine, which shaft has a bevel gear 14 fixed thereto through which the shaft is driven at the desired speed from some suitable source of power not shown herein. This shaft 12 has also fixed thereto a roll 15 which engages and drivesthe upper web 1 as it leaves the point of the turner.- The side edges of the upper and lower webs 1 and 2 project a short distance beyond the ends of the roll 15.
I The shaft 12 has two pulleys 16, 17,
loosely mounted thereon and held in position adjacent to the ends of the roll 15 by retaining collars 18, 19. The lower web 2 as it leaves the turner is engaged and driven by two pulleys 20, 21, fixed to a shaft 22 mounted in movablespring-pressed bearings 23, 24,
supported by brackets 25, 26, fixed to the framing 13. Rotary motion at the desired speed is imparted to the shaft 22 from the shaft 12 through intermeshing spur gears 27,
28. The two driving pulleys 20, 21, which engage the lower web 2, serve to press the side edges of the webs against the loose pulleys 16, 17, thus causing the webs to travel in unison.
Guide rolls 29, 30 serve to direct the upper and lower webs from the left hand turner 10 and a guide roll 31 serves to direct from the left hand" the upper and lower webs turner 11.
At the point of the right hand turner '9 V which forms part of the double turner 9, 10',
there is located a device quitesimilar to thedevices at the points of the left hand turners 1O, 11, which device comprises the following 3 parts.
A shaft 32 is mounted to rotate in' suitable bearings in the framing 13, which shaft has a gear 33 fixed thereto whereby the mounted thereon and held in position adj acent to the ends of the roll 37 by retaining collars 40, 41.
The lower web 2 as it leaves the turner, is engaged and driven by two pulleys 42, 43, fixed to stud shafts 44, 45, mounted in bearings 46, 47, in the upper arms 48, 49, of spring-actuated rocking levers mounted on studs 50, 51, fixed to the framing 13. These rocking levers have lower arms 52, 53, which are held yieldingly at the limit of their movement in one direction by springs 54, 55, thus causing the pulleys 42, 43 to press the edges of the upper and lower webs against the pul leys 38, 39. Rotary motion is imparted to the pulleys 42, 43, by providing the shafts 44, 45, with gears 56, 57, which mesh with gears 58, 59, fixed to the shaft The two driving pulleys 42, 43, which engage the lower web 2, serve to press the side edges of the webs against the loose pulleys 38, 39, thus causing the webs to travel in unison. Guide rolls 60, 61, are arranged for directing the upper and lower webs from the turner 9 to any desired point.
While I have shown a right hand and a left hand turner forming a double turner and have also shown a single left hand turner, it is to be understood that this device is applicable for a plurality of double turners or a plurality of double turners either in connection with single right or left hand turners as may be desired.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, right and left hand turners forming a double turner around which upper and lower webs are passed, the point of one of the turners being above the point of the other turner and a device for each of the turners arranged to engage both the upper and lower webs as they leave the turner for driving the webs in unison.
2. In combination, right and left hand turners forming a double turner around which upper and lower webs are passed, the point of one of the turners being above the point of the other turner and a device located at the point of each turner arranged to engage both the upper and lower webs as they leave the turner for driving the webs in unison.
3. In combination, right and left hand turners forming a double turner around which upper and lower webs are passed, the point of one of the turners being above the point of the other turner, a device at the point of each of the turners arranged to engage both the upper and lower webs as they leave the turner for driving the webs in unison and a driving connection between the two devices.
4. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a device arranged to drive both of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging one web and stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the other web and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
5. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a device arranged to drive both of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a drive roll for engaging the upper Web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the lower web and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
6. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a device arranged to drive both of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging one web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the other web, movable springpressed bearings for the driving .pulley stud shafts, and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving roll pulleys.
7. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a device arranged to drive both of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging the upper web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the lower web, movable spring-pressed bearings for the driving pulley stud shafts and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
8. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a device arranged to drive both of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging one web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaigng the other web, driving connections between the stud shafts and the driving roll shaft, and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
9. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a de- -v1ce arranged to drive both of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging the upper web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the lower web, driving connections between the stud shafts and the driving roll shaft, and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
10. In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are assed and a device arranged to drive bot of the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging one Web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the other web, movable spring pressed bearings for the driving pulley stud shafts, a driving connection between the stud shafts and the driving roll shaft, and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.

In combination, a turner around which upper and lower webs are passed and a device arranged to drive both of .the webs in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging the upper web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the lower web, movable spring-pressed bearings for the driving pulley stud shafts, a driving connection between the stud shafts and the driving roll shaft, and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
12. In combination, right and left hand turners forming a double turner around which upper and lower Webs are passed, one of the turners being shorter than the other, a device arranged to drive both of the webs from the longer turner in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging one web, a shaft having driving pulleys for engaging the other web and loose ulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys, and a device arranged to drive both of the webs from the shorter turner in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging one web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the other web, and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft copulleys for engaging the lower web and loose pulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys, and a device arranged to drive both of the webs from the shorter turner in unison comprising a shaft having a driving roll for engaging the upper web, stud shafts having driving pulleys for engaging the lower web, and loose ulleys on the driving roll shaft coacting with the driving pulleys on the stud shafts.
