FOLDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,922, dated October 4, 1881.

To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that LGILBER'I E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a folding-machine which is intended particularly to impart longitudinal folds toa web or sheets passing through it; and theinvention consists,principally,in the construction of the folder, and in various combinations of the same with other devices, all ot' which are particularly hereinafter set forth.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or top-view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of one pair of converging half-twist tapes detached. Fig. is a detached view of the rollers and a portion of one pair of the converging half-twist tapes. Fig. 4 is an end view of the machine. Figs. 5 and 6 are details, which will be referred to as the description progresses. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. In the drawings, the letters A A' designate two rollers which feed the sheet to be folded into the folding-machine. As the sheet leaves these feed-rollers its central portion is caught between the creasingrollers B B', and its edges pass between the tapesO C' D D'. The tapes O O' are situated on one side of the machine. Theyare stretched over pulleys co2 0'03, respectively, the pulleys c c'being mounted on horizontal axles o4 c5 (see Fig. 3)close to the feedrollers A A', while the pulleys c2 c3 are mounted on vertical axles o6 c7 (Figs. 1 and 4) secured in a traverse, E, at the outer end of the main frame F. The tapes D D' are situated on the opposite side of the machine, and they are stretched over pulleys el d2 d' d3, respectively, the pulleys d d' being mounted on horizontal axles close to the feed-rollers AAA', 4while the pulleys d2 d3 are mounted on vertical axles d6 d", Figs. 1 and 4, secured to the traverse E.
By referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 it will be seen that each of the tapes O C' 'D D' has a half-twist, and, furthermore, the two pairs of tapes convergetoward the outer end of the machine. At the point where the edges of the sheet pass from the feed-rollers between the tapes O O' and D D', respectively, said tapes are in horizontal planes, but as these tapes gradually turn from a horizon tal to a Vertical position the edges of vthe sheet are compelled to followand they Iassume a vertical position as they approach the outer end otthe machine. At the same time the central part of the sheet, after having been carried through between the creasing-rollers B B', passes beneath a cord, e, which is stretched over pulleys c' e2, Figs. 1 and 2, in a downwardly-inclined position, (best seen in Fig. 2,) the central portion or bight of the sheet being supported byguide-rollersfff. By the (3o-operation of the creasing-rollers B B', halftwist converging tapes O O'D D', and downwardly-inclined cord c, the sheet is gradually folded, and as it approaches in its partially-folded condition the outer end of the machine its sides or wings strike the secondary tapes Gr H, which are stretched over Vertical rollers g g' h h', Figs. 1, 2, and 4. By referring to these n'guresfit will be seen that the rollers g and h are mounted on opposite sides of the main frame F in lugs or brackets g2 he, respect# ively, while the rollers g' h' are mounted in the outer end of the main frame F, in brackets g3 h3 and traverse t', (see Fig. 4,) the roller g' being directly beneatlrthe pulley c2, and the roller h' directly beneath the pulley d2. The lower ends of the rollers g' h' are enlarged, (see Figs. 2 and 4,) and by the action of the secondary tapes G H the partially-folded sheet is carried between the rollers g' h', the bight of the sheet being firmly compressedby the enlarged portions of said rollers. The sheet, having been folded in a longitudinal direction, is delivered by the rollers g' J1.' to an additional folding mechanism, I, which may be such as described in Letters Patent N o. 229,419, granted to me June 29, 1880, or of any other suitable construction to impart to the sheet an additional fold in the direction at right angles to that produced by the folding mechanism above described.
In order to produce the longitudinal fold it is not absolutely essential to employ both the cord e and creasing-roller, since by using the cord e without thecreasing-roller the sheet will be folded, and in lthe same mannerafold may be produced by usingthecreasing-rollers without the cord c. The essential and chief elements in my folding-machine are the halt-twist converging tapes.
It remains to indicate the means by which I impart motion to the various working parts of my folding-machine.
The feed-rollers A A receive their motion from the printing-press, if my folding-machine is used in connection with such, or said rollers may receive their motion byany suitablcmeans.
The pulleys c c' d d, which carry the ball"- twist converging tapes C- C D D', are driven by frictionalcontact from the feed-rollers A A. For this purpose cone-pulleysm are employed, Figs. l and 2, which are mounted on sha-ft a, running parallel to the shafts ofthe pulleys c c d d', respectively, and which bear against one of the feed-rollers, A or A', and against corresponding cone-pulleys, o, mounted on the shafts of the pulleys c c el d', respectively.
The creasing-roller B is driven by frictional contactfroin the upperfeed-roller,A. For this purpose a friction-pulley, p, is mounted on a shaft, p', and brought in contact with thefeedroller A, and with a friction-pulley, p2, Figs. 1 and 6, mounted on the shaft of the creasingroller B. (See Figs. 1 and 5.) On the shaft of the creasing-roller Bis also mounted africtionpulley, q, Figs. 1 and G, which, by means of an intermediate friction-pulley, q', imparts motion to afriction-pulley, q2, Fig. 1, mounted on the shaft of the pulley c', which carries the cord c.
'lhc secondary tapes G H receive their motion from the pulley d3, Fig. 4, the shaft of which extends down and carries a cog-Wheel, r, which mesliesin a cog-wheel, r', mounted on the shalt of the roller h', and gearing into a similar cog-wheel, r2, mounted on the shaft of the roller g'.
In conclusion,I will remark that the effect of my folder will be the sameit' the corde runs in an upwardly-inchned direction instead of in a downwardly-inclined direction, provided the position ot' the secondary tapes and other parts is changed to correspond.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the feed-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, and means, substantially such as described, for acting on the central portion of the sheet to aid in forming thelongitudinal fold.
2. The combination of the feed-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, means, substantially such as described, for acting on the central portion of the sheet to aid in forming the longitudinal fold, and the secondary tapes G and H, essentially as set forth.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of' the feed-rollers, the halftwist converging tapes, and the cord c.
4. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the feed-rollers, the creasing-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, and the cord c.
5.- The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the feed-rollers, the creasing-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, the cord c, and the supporting-rollers f.
6. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the feed-rollers, the creasing-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, the cord c, and the secondary tapes G H.
7. The combination of the feed-rollers, the halftwist converging tapes, means, substantially such as described, for acting on the central portion of the sheet to aid in forming the -longitudinal f'old, the secondary tapes G and H, and the pressing-rollers g and h', essentially as set forth.
8. 'The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, ofthe feed-rollers, the creasing-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, the cord c, the secondary tapes G H, and the pressing-rollers g h.
9. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the feed-rollers, the creasing-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, the cord c, the supporting-rollers j', the secondary ta pes G H, and the pressing-rollers g h.
10. The combination ot' the feed-rollers, thc half-twist converging tapes, and the frictionpulleys m and o for imparting motion to the tapes.
ll. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the feed-rollers, the halftwist converging tapes, the creasing-rollers, the cord e, the friction-lmlleys 11192, for imparting motion to thc creasing-rollers, and the friction-pulleys q q q2, for imparting motion to the cord c.
12. The combination of the feed-rollers, the half-twist converging tapes, means, substantially such as described, for acting on the ccntral portion ofthe sheet to aid in forming the longitudinal fold, the secondary tapes G and H, the pulley d3, the shaft 117, the pressingrollers g and h', and cog-wheels r i" r2, essentially as set forth.
