FOLDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 615,770, dated December 13, 1898.
Application filed June 29, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDRICK H. WENDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to double-folding machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a section on the line 1 1 in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 shows a plan view, the top (not shown) being removed to better show construction. Fig. 3 shows a section on the line 3 3 in Figs. 1 and 2, a part being broken away to a section on the line 3 3 in said figures.
A marks the sides of the frame, and A the cross-pieces of the frame. The first-fold rolls comprise the roll B, of ordinary construction, and a companion roll formed of the longitudinally-movable members B B and fixed roll B all arranged on a shaft B The movable rolls B B are provided with a spline b and groove mechanism, which looks them against rotation on the shaft B and allows their free longitudinal movement on said shaft. The rolls are provided with the gears B B, one on the shaft B and the other on the roll B, to compel them to move in unison. A driveshaft F is journaled in the frame under the folding-roll B. A drive-pulley F is mounted on this shaft, and a gear F meshes a gear B on the shaft carrying the roll B, so that the roll B is driven from the shaft F.
The roll B is provided with an annular groove 1), into which runs a slitter-roll c, which is mounted on the shaft C. The shaft C is journ'aled in the frame and a bracket C secured to one of the cross-pieces. It has. a gear 0, which meshes a gear 13 and causes the rotation of the shaft C.

rolls it is deflected, as commonly, by tapes, (not shown,) which start and carry the paper through the slitter and over the second-fold rolls D D, one set at each side of the machine. The slitter having separated the paper, the duplicate folding mechanisms at each side of the machine each take a sheet and fold it independently of the duplicate mechanism at the opposite side of the machine. The shaft D of one of each pair of rolls D has mounted on its end a gear D which meshes a gear f on the shaft F. The gear f has a grooved hub and is secured to the shaft F by a spline and groove mechanism, so that it is locked against rotation on the shaft, but is free to move longitud inally thereon. Each mechanism is provided with the usual starter D. This starter is carried by the arms D D which are carried by a shaft D mounted in the frame. An arm I extends from the shaft D and is pro- 7o vided at its end with a roller D". A shaft G is journaled in the frame and has mounted upon it two cams G of considerable length. The roller D is arranged to ride the cam G, and the cam is so shaped as to give to the starter D the desired starting movement. A gear G on the end of the shaft G meshes with a gear F on the shaft F, by means of which the shaft G is driven.
In order that different sizes of sheets may be folded through their center at the second fold, the second-fold rolls D D, with their starters D, are mounted in sliding boxes D which allows these rolls,with attendant mechanism, to be shifted to and from the center of the machine, as the size of the sheet requires. The cams G are sufficiently long to present a cam-surface to the roller D in all positions. I
The sliding boxes are arranged on the cross- 0 pieces A in guides at a, and the boxes extend through slots a in the cross-pieces and are provided with the racks (l on their lower edges. commonly, and is carried over the third-fold 10o rolls E E, through which it is run. There may be subsequent folds, if desired. The rolls E E are journaled in cross-pieces E.
In order that wrinkling at the third fold may be prevented, I pass the sheet through a perforator before passing it through the secondfold rolls. The perforator consists of the perforating-wheel c, mounted on a sleeve 0 The sleeve has the annular groove 0 and is mounted on the shaft 0 and locked against rotative movement thereon by the spline 0 It is free to move longitudinally on the shaft 0, however. A bracket d, having the fork d which engages the grooved sleeve 0 is attached to and carried with the sliding box D The perforating-wheel c is therefore moved with the rolls D D, so that it is always in register with the folding-line of the rolls. This brings the perforated line on the sheet at the fold as desired and provides for the perforation of different sizes of sheets. The bracket is also provided with a fork d which engages the grooved hub of the gear f. This mechanism moves the gear f, with the sliding boxes, so that it is kept in mesh with the gear D The roll B is provided with the annular groove 1), into which the perforating-wheelc runs. In order that this groove may be kept in register with the perforating-wheel in its various positions, a bracket 61*, attached to the sliding box D is provided, and this bracket has a forked end 61 which engages the roll B by means of a groove b so that the roll 13' is moved with the sliding box D and the perforating-wheel.
If desired, the sheets may be passed through the first-fold rolls without making a fold. In this case what I term the second fold will, in reality, be the first fold. The perforation would in this case also be effective for the object sought, but not so necessary.
\Vhat I claim as new is- I 1. In a folding-machine, the combination with a set of adjustable folding-rolls; of a perforator; and means for automatically adj usting said perforator with each adjustment of said folding-rolls to maintain it in register with the folding-line of said rolls.
2. In a folding-machine, the combination with the folding-rolls D D; of the sliding boxes carrying said rolls; a shaft 0; a perforating-wheel mounted on said shaft and arranged to be movable longitudinally thereon and means carried by said sliding box for moving said perforating-wheel longitudinally on the shaft.
3. In a folding-machine, the combination with the folding-rolls D D; of the sliding boxes carrying said rolls; a shaft 0; a perforating-wheel mounted on said shaft and arranged to be movable longitudinally thereon; means carried byisaid sliding box for moving said perforating-wheel longitudinally on the shaft; a shaft B a roll B mounted on said shaft B and arranged to be movable longitudinally thereon; and being provided with an annular groove Z) in which the perforator runs; and means carried by said sliding box for moving said roll longitudinally with the perforating-wheel.
4. In a double-folding machine, the combination with a centrally-located slitter; two sets of folding-rolls, one each side of the slitter and adjustable to and from the slitter; of a perforator for each set of folding-rolls; and means for automatically adjusting said perforators with each adjustment of said folding-rolls to maintain them in register with the folding-line of said rolls.
5. In a double-folding machine, the combination with two sets of folding-rolls oppositely placed; and sliding boxes carrying said rolls which are adjustable to and from each other; of a shaft C; slitter a mounted on said shaft; longitudinally-movable perforatingwheels 0 also mounted thereon; and means for moving said perforating-Wheels with said sliding boxes.
6. In a double-folding machine, the combination with two sets of folding-rolls oppositely placed; and sliding boxes carrying said rolls which are adjustable to and from each other; of a shaft 0; longitudinally-movable perforating-wheels c mounted on said shaft; means for moving said perforatingwheels with said sliding boxes; a shaft B; longitudinally-movable rolls B on said shaft pro vided with the annular grooves 19 in which run the perforating-wheels; and means for moving said rolls B with the said sliding boxes.
