Description

JAMES PATRICK OREILLY, OF PHOENIX, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
SASH-CORD GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1911.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
Serial No. 622,054.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES P. OREILLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and Territory of Arizona, have invented an Improved Sash-Cord Guide, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved substitute for the ordinary sash-cord guide, and also an improvement in the manner of securing it to a window frame.
By the old construction and method of attachment, it is necessary to bore two holes one-eighth of an inch deep in the window jamb and then to bore three more holes completely through the frame, and finally to chisel out the triple bore to form a mortise adapted to receive the pulley frame or casing.
In carrying out my invention, it is required to bore only one hole, which is through the j amb, and then insert therein a hollow cylinder having, interiorly, a small sash-cord pulley, and on the projecting end of such cylinder the frame containing the usual large sash-cord pulley is hung detachably, the engagement being effected by a sliding joint.
. In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a window frame or jamb, together with my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section' on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the pulley frame and a portion of the window jamb to which it is applied. Fig. 4: is a horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cylinder upon which the pulley frame is, in practice, hung detachably. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the pulley frame and pulley j ournaled therein.
Referring in the first instance to Fig. 1, a indicates a window jamb or frame, I) a sash slidable therein, and c a sash-cord to which, in practice, a weight (not shown) is attached.
My improved attachment consists of two parts, to wit, a hollow cylinder 1 having a small pulley 2 j ournaled therein, and a slotted semicircular frame 8 having a larger pulley 4: journaled therein. The arrangement and detachable engagement of the cylinder and frame are best shown in Fig. 1,
the cylinder being inserted through a bore in the jamb and the pulley frame 3 being hung on the portion thereof which projects inward from the jamb. While the part 1 is termed a cylinder, it is not so in fact, itbeing flattened on two sides and one end thereof being provided with vertical ribs and grooves 1*, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The pulley frame 3 is provided interio-rly with corresponding vertical ribs and grooves 3, the same being located in the upper and inner portion of the pulley slot, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The engagement of the two parts, 1 and 3, is effected by sliding the part 3 down on part 1 until the head of the frame 3 rests upon the cylinder, the ribs and grooves thus engaging, so that the pulley frame is hung in the position indicated in Fig. 1., The cylinder 1 is provided at top and bottom with a longitudinal rib 1 and on its outer or face end with a radial flange or head 1see Fig. 5. The ribs 1 serve to prevent rotation of the cylinder in the bore of the amb, and the head 1, which is flush with the face of the j amb, prevents the cylinder being inserted too far. The small sash-cord pulley 2 is located near the outer or face end and in the lower portion of the cylinder 1, and the large sash-cord pulley 4: is journaled in the slot of the frame 3 at such a point as to give due clearance to the sash-cord.
It is apparent that my improvement may be cheaply constructed, easily and cheaply applied or detached, and thus constitutes a desirable substitute for the old form of attachment, which not only requires several borings to be made in the j amb, but also the use of nails or screws for holding the attachment in place.
What I claim is 1. The improved sash-cord guide comprising a cylinder constructed hollow and having a small pulley arranged adjacent to its face end, and a slotted frame having a sashy cord pulley journaled in the slot, the cylinder and frame having parts adapted for detachable engagement and the frame constructed with a top portion adapted to engage and rest on the cylinder and thus support the frame in due position, substantially as described.
2. The improved sash-cord guide comprising a cylinder adapted for insertion in a bore of a Window jamb, its inner end being adapted to bear upon the cylinder and thus constructed With vertical ribs and grooves, support the frame in the required position, and a slotted frame having a sash-cord pulsubstantially as described.
ley journaled therein and also provided in- JAMES PATRICK OREILLY. teriorly with ribs and grooves adapted for Vitnesses:
