A device for controlling functions in, especially, a napkin-manufacturing machine, for instance its cutting position relatively an embossed edging (31) in a running material web (1), which is characterized in comprising a signal transmitter (3) mounted on a resilient member (2) consisting of at least two spring plates (4,5), the resilient member being in sliding contact with the material web (1) for the purpose of sensing the presence of level changes exhibited by the web (1) and generating a signal performing the control of function units in the machine; in which the signal transmitter (3) is mounted on the spring plate (4) which is predetermined to elastically contact with the other spring plate (5), the spring plate (5) being slidingly contacting the material web (1); and the spring plate (4) supporting the signal transmitter (3) has a relative portion (6) mounted on a carrier above a freely movable portion (7) of the web (1), its end (30) being positioned and in abutment with a center portion (9) of the spring plate (5) and slidingly contacting the material web (1).
