Abstract

The particle transport element (30, 32) on the inside of the separation chamber (6) extends in an axial direction past the inlet (38), and a tubular wall (26) coaxial with this element and surrounded by part of this element extends slightly into the inlet end of the chamber, in an axial direction past the inlet. A helical flow channel (38, 40) is formed between the peripheral wall (10) of the chamber, the tubular wall and the transport element. A cyclone (2) for separating a mixture of steam and solid particles into a light (steam) fraction and a heavy (particle) fraction comprises a housing (4) that forms a rotation symmetrical separation chamber containing at least one tangential inlet at one end of the chamber, a heavy fraction exit (18) at the opposite end, and a light fraction exit (16) centrally located at the opposite end of the chamber to the heavy fraction exit. A transport device (22) rotatable inside the chamber about its symmetry axis comprises at least one elongated transport element extending helically along the chamber peripheral wall (10, 12), and is used to convey separated particles on the inside of the wall to the heavy fraction exit. The transport element extends in an axial direction past the inlet, and a tubular wall coaxial with this element and surrounded by part of this element extends slightly into the inlet end of the chamber, in an axial direction past the inlet. A helical flow channel is formed between the peripheral wall of the chamber, the tubular wall and the transport element.
