Abstract
The microprocessor control unit is connected by signal lines to devices controlling the fuel system, retarder and antilock (ABS)/antislip (ASR) braking system. It responds to a braking program switch near the driver's left foot, a clutch-pedal switch and sources connected to the transmission mode selector lever, economy/hillclimb mode selector, retarder coolant thermometer, gearbox output shaft tachometer etc. The use of engine braking depends upon whether the braking program switch is engaged so as to raise the normal gear-change point, and whether the loss of speed during the change exceeds a predetermined threshold dependent upon the mode of operation (kickdown).
