Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the brake effect of the vehicle by a method wherein a direct coupling clutch is engaged when a low speed changing step is selected and the vehicle is running under the condition of an engine-brake in case a gear type speed changing mechanism and the direct coupling clutch are controlled based on various kinds of input signals. CONSTITUTION:A computer 100, for controlling the automatic speed changer based on the signals of respective sensors 1-8, controls the solenoids 11, 12 of the gear type speed changing mechanism and the solenoid 13 of the direct coupling clutch. When the gear type speed changing mechanism is set at the low speed changing step and the engine-brake is employed, the solenoid 13 is operated to engage the direct coupling clutch and thereby applying the engine-brake more effectively.
