Abstract
In chill metallurgy, the slag thickness and density are measured with a lance (14) which is pushed through the slag (13) down into the smelt (12). To the lance is fed a constant flow of argon gas and the counter pressure in the lance and the lance position is logged when it is pushed downwards. From this value is obtained the slag thickness and density. With knowledge of the chill area, the amt. of slag can then be calculated, which is an important parameter which is used for optimising the process.
