Abstract

LASER WELDING APPARATUS AND PROCESS Laser welding apparatus includes a laser whose beam is focused to a focal point above, below, or at the surface of the welding substrate with a power density sufficiently high to melt a portion of the substrate to form a weld puddle, a laser welding nozzle which delivers powder to the weld puddle uniformly around its circumference, a powder feed system that supplies powder to the welding nozzle, and an axial gas flow system that flows gas through the nozzle toward the substrate to modify the powder flow and protect the apparatus from damage by the intense heat. The laser welding nozzle preferably includes outer and inner frustoconical housings that define an annulus therebetween, and powder mixed with a fluidizing gas is metered through the annulus and to the weld puddle, where it later solidifies to form a weld bead.
