Abstract
The invention relates to an arc relay intended for detecting an arc possibly flashing up at one or more points (A to E) of a switchgear (1) and for extinguishing it by causing a circuit-breaker supplying current to the switchgear to be opened. The arc relay comprises a pickup sensor for collecting light; an optical fibre (3) connected to the pickup sensor for transmitting the collected light forwards along the fibre; a photosensor (7) connected to the end of the fibre (3); and an electronics unit (4) connected to the photosensor (7) for controlling the circuit-breaker in response to the detected arc. A major drawback of known arc relays utilizing a collector lens is that they become complicated and expensive with an increasing number of points to be monitored. The problem is solved by means of the invention in such a manner that the pickup sensor is formed by the transparent cladding surrounding the core of the fibre (3).
