Abstract

A forme is used which is etched or engraved to provide a gravure image and which, in order to print a substrate, is supplied with both ink and a damping agent. The ink and damping agent may be supplied separately or by means of an emulsion; the forme can be copper with a chromium surface layer; alternatively, the forme may be completely coated with chromium so that whilst the non-printing smooth surface does not take up ink, the ink remains suspended in the gravure cells; in another alternative, the forme may be plastics. The forme cylinder may co-operate with an impression cylinder or with a rubber offset cylinder.
