Abstract

A piston engine 1, the crankshaft of which can be rotated by means of a starter motor 3, is started by the starter motor being switched off in a position in which one of the pistons is performing a compression stroke, so that the engine, by its own inertia, takes the piston past the upper dead centre. The starter motor is then restarted so as to repeat the operation with another piston. In an engine with an ignition system and an electric starter motor, the ignition spark release takes place while the starter motor is switched off. A suitable arrangement for carrying out starting is also proposed. <IMAGE>
