Abstract
Melt treatment involves forming a flow of low-temperature plasma by passing plasma forming agent through the arc and introducing the low temperature plasma stream to the metal melt. The plasma stream should be introduced into the melt from within this, from the meniscus side at a rate of up to 1500 m/sec so as to mix the melt, feeding in additives previously led through the plasma stream. The additives preferably contain nitrogen and comprise slagging fillers crushed beforehand to 0.1 to 1.0mm and with 0 to 100% oxygen content relative the plasma forming agent volume. - Equipment includes a plasmatron reciprocating in the vertical over the melt meniscus. The plasmatron should be fitted with a nozzle connected to the plasmatron endface directed toward the melt. The inlet section of the nozzle should equal the plasmatron outlet section at the plasma stream exit and the nozzle should be immersed in the melt to a length between 0.1 and 0.8 of the height of the column of melt. Preferably the plasmatron can adjust in the horizontal plane and is in jet design, with external plasMa arc. At its outlet the nozzle should be fitted with a plate whose centre hole coincides with the inside nozzle bore, and whose continuous vertical channels increase in number from the centre outwards. The nozzle should also have an additives feed orifice at the outlet.
