Abstract

An oil collecting vessel 1 has at least one oil separation tank 3 into which the water/oil dispersion to be separated is transferable from a collecting tank 2 and at least one cargo tank into which the oil separated from the water/oil dispersion is transferable from the separation tank 3. Each separation tank 3 or combination of tanks has an oblong shape, deep in respect to its width and aligned in the direction of the ship's longitudinal axis, flow of the water/oil dispersion also taking place in this direction due to individually adjustable water pumps fitted to the bottom of the tank or tanks. The length of the separation tank 3 or combination of tanks is at least 20% of the ship's length. The system achieves reduced dispersion of oil to water in the separation tanks 3 in heavy sea. In a preferred embodiment, the cargo tank is paced between separation tanks at the ship's sides to protect the cargo tank from damage in a collision. <IMAGE>
